Jumper tops weekend box office

By Laurie A. Trotta

The science fiction thriller “Jumper” vaulted to the head of the movie box office line for the weekend ended Feb. 17, taking first place with estimated gross revenues of $27.2 million, according to USA Today and other sources.

Directed by Doug Liman, who also directed “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and the “Bourne Identity,” “Jumper” tells the fictional story of a centuries-old war between individuals who can teleport themselves anywhere in the world (jumpers), and a secret society dedicated to stopping them.

The film raced past fellow newbies “Step Up 2 The Streets,” the hip hop dancing sequel to “Step Up” that raked in $19.7 million, and the children’s fantasy “Spiderwick Chronicles,” which came in third with $19.1 million.

Fool’s Gold, the Kate Hudson-Matthew McConaughey adventure comedy, came in fourth with $13.1 million, and the Ryan Reynolds romantic dramedy “Definitely, Maybe” closed out the top five with a gross of $9.7 million.

The comedy “Juno” was the only Oscar Best Picture nominee remaining on the top-ten list, ranking 7th with $4.6 million, while last month’s darling, the “Hannah Montana” concert film, slid to 9th place with a $3.2 million take. The other movies in the top 10 were (6) “Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins,” $8.9 million; (8) “The Bucket List,” $4.1 million; and (10) “27 Dresses,” $3.2 million.

jumper

The filming style of Jumper made me feel like i myself was jumping around, which was cool. Also Christensen’s lines were as short as possible, which was ideal for the movie’s overall quality.
