Madonna tour grosses $91.5 million in North America
Madonna is already majesty when it comes to her performance on the pop music charts, but the singer could be on her way to claiming two more crowns: the highest grossing tour ever by a female artist and solo artist.
The Queen of Pop grossed an approximate $91.5 million and sold about 550,000 tickets during her recent 28-date run of the U.S. and Canada, according to Sticky & Sweet tour producer and Live Nation global music chairman Arthur Fogel. The stateside leg of the jaunt concluded on November 26 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL, with an estimated crowd of 50,000 in attendance.
Billboard marks Madge's current worldwide gross at approximately $207.5 million, and estimates the tour could reach $282 million following the singer's December run of South America. Those numbers would be enough to tip the solo and female tour honors in Madonna's favor.
Madonna previously earned the title for top grossing tour by a female artist for her 2006 Confessions tour. The 60-show jaunt grossed $193.7 million and had an audience of 1.2 million people, according to a statement from Fogel at the time. Before that, Cher held the spot with her 273-date Farewell tour, which spanned from 2002 to 2005 and grossed 192.5 million.
The performer's 2004 Re-Invention tour had ticket sales of nearly $125 million, while her 2001 Drowned World tour grossed more than $75 million.
For the duration of her North American outing, Madonna was consistently ranked in the Top 10 for TicketNews's concert rankings. The Sticky & Sweet tour supports the singer's April 2008 release "Hard Candy," which has spent nearly 30 weeks on the Billboard 200 after peaking at No. 1.
Madonna's South American dates begin on December 3 at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and wraps with shows on December 18, 20 and 21 at Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil.
