Miley Cyrus flexes her Hannah Montana muscle at the box office
The teen pop phenomenon Miley Cyrus scored another number one film at the box office this weekend with "Hannah Montana: The Movie", which opened to $34 million, according to studio estimates from Nielsen EDI.
The debut further illustrates the tale of the 16-year old star Hannah Montana who spends her days incognito as a regular school girl. This is Cyrus’ third number one score in less than two years, following her stellar numbers for the animated "Bolt" and the chart-breaking "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert", all for Disney.
The auto epic "Fast & Furious" fell to second place with $28.8 million. The film, which reunites original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, has earned $118 million in 10 days. "Monsters vs. Aliens" continues to find an audience, taking in $22.6 million this weekend for third place. The animated comedy is up to $141 million after three weeks.
Seth Rogen's R-rated comedy "Observe and Report" debuted with $11.1 million, while the Nicolas Cage thriller "Knowing" rounded out the top 5 with $6.7 million. After a month in theaters, it has grossed $68 million.
Box office grosses continued to tower over last year, jumping 62 percent over the same weekend in 2008. Final figures are due Monday.
