R. Kelly awarded multimillion dollar judgment against promoter Leonard Rowe

By Jane Cohen & Bob Grossweiner

Arbitrator Richard P. Byrne, a retired California Superior Court judge, awarded R&B superstar R. Kelly $3.4 million in damages from tour promoter Leonard Rowe, according to a court document filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. Atlanta-based Rowe promoted Kelly's 35-city Double Up tour last fall and winter.

After Rowe failed to pay Kelly several million dollars in tour proceeds that he was owed, Kelly began legal proceedings against Rowe while he was still on tour last February. In essence, Kelly, not wanting to disappoint his fans, performed for free.

"I agreed to let Leonard Rowe promote my tour because he convinced me he was an underdog who deserved a chance to prove himself," Kelly said in a statement. "Like the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished."

Rowe has also been the target of a series of lawsuits filed by investors who accused him of bilking them out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling them non-existent shares in the Double Up tour. Kelly's contract with Rowe expressly barred the promoter from selling off shares in Kelly's shows without the singer's permission.

In his ruling, Byrne determined that Rowe had sold shares without Kelly's knowledge or consent. As a result, in addition to awarding Kelly $3,397,410.38 in monetary damages, Byrne also ordered Rowe to take full responsibility for all the lawsuits.

Leonard Rowe

It was almost a comedy show that Larry King hosted with MJ's father and former promoter, Leonard Rowe. Why does King allow these pathetic individuals to dictate his show? The previous comments are right on about Rowe. He is trying to re-establish his credibility in the business, by appearing as a victim on Larry King's show. The man has no credibility after being sued by many of his big name clients. Larry King needs to examine his guest with tougher questions, because his credibility is shrinking with his viewing public

This guy is nothing but

This guy is nothing but trouble and a con man. He came across as an utter buffoon on the Larry King show. If MJ had let him in his circle he would have tried to rob him blind like he did R. Kelly.

Rowe and Michael Jackson

Rowe is in the news again saying on Larry King Live (this date) AEG promoters did not want him though Michael did. Mr. Jackson said he was barred from getting to his son by security guards. Look at who paid security over the course of years of his addiction. Perhaps in the end Michael's people were controlled by outsiders. That could explain why the alleged intervention attempts failed. Surely, however, earlier in this saga--say between 1984 and his death--Michael himself gave the orders. Addicts typically isolate in order to use. Just what went horribly wrong at the end we may never know. Rowe seems very much like another spotlight chaser Jesse Jackson.
