Weezer tour derailed as bus accident leaves Rivers Cuomo hospitalized
After an early morning tour bus accident on December 6 left frontman Rivers Cuomo hospitalized with minor injuries, alt-rock band Weezer cancelled the remaining December dates of its Raditude Tour. Cuomo sustained three cracked ribs, internal damage and a lower leg injury when his tour bus skidded off a stretch of road in Albany during icy conditions.
The only other passengers at the time of the accident were Cuomo's wife and two-year-old daughter, their nanny, and Cuomo's personal assistant. Neither the driver nor the singer's family were injured, though the assistant fractured two ribs and a lower vertebrae.
There were only three more dates left on the Weezer's December calendar. The accident happened as the band was driving to its December 7 concert at Agganis Arena in Boston, MA. Also cancelled were upcoming gigs on December 9 at Patriot Center in Washington, DC, and December 10 at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ.
"When we can reschedule the dates, we will, of course," wrote Weezer webmaster Karl Koch in a statement on the band's official Web site.
"I have no ticket or refund or whatever info at this time, but stay tuned to this site and the ticketing websites for more info," Koch continued. "For now its [sic] a waiting game for all of us. Thanks for your kind thoughts and good wishes, we need them!"
Cuomo's assistant was treated and released from the hospital, while Cuomo was moved to a larger hospital for observation, where he remains. According to the most recent updates from Koch, Cuomo's condition continues to improve, and he could be released from the hospital "pretty soon."
At least four West Coast performances are booked for January 2010, though Weezer is currently expected to fulfill those engagements. Next year's touring season currently begins with a January 9 concert at Bill graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, CA.
