"Baby Mama" wins weekend box office

By Laurie A. Trotta

Women out-paced men at the movie box office for the weekend ending April 27, as "Baby Mama" took the top spot at the box office over "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay."

"Baby Mama," the comedy about surrogate motherhood starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, took in $18.3 million, according to box office sources. Second-place "Harold & Kumar" generated about $14.6 million, almost $2 million more than most analysts predicted, but still almost $4 million short of the Fey/Poehler vehicle.

The weekend showdown was a true battle of the sexes: More than two-thirds of "Baby Mama's" audience was female, while "Harold & Kumar" lured the same percentage of male moviegoers, according to USA Today.

Universal Pictures, which released "Baby Mama," also released "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," the Judd Apatow-produced comedy that was fourth with $11 million in its second week.

Warner Bros. released the R-rated "Harold & Kumar," a sequel to the 2004 film, "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," which did $18.4 million and became a home video hit with young men.

The Jackie Chan and Jet Li adventure "Forbidden Kingdom" was third with $11.2 million, while Jodie Foster's "Nim's Island" was No. 5 with $4.3 million.

The only other big newcomer, the Ewan McGregor-Hugh Jackman thriller "Deception," was a flop with $2.3 million, good for 10th place.
