After a few weeks of slowly climbing in the rankings, Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ, finally took over the top slot in TicketNews’s exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, September 27. The Stadium is home to the NFL’s New York Giants (at number four in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings) and New York Jets, who just completed week three of their current season. The real boost to the Stadium’s numbers, however, may have come from this week’s much-anticipated five-date appearance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (at number three in this week’s Top Concert Events rankings) which closes out the final musical roster for the Stadium before it shuts its gates at the end of the NFL season. Giants Stadium power scored a 3.27 this week.
At number one for two weeks, Madison Square Garden (MSG) dropped one to take the number two spot, power scoring a 3.14. MSG is home to the New York Rangers and New York Knicks, who came in at number ten in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events this week. The venue also benefits from strong sales for such upcoming acts as Springsteen, KISS (at number two in this week’s Top Concerts), Metallica (number nine) and Pink (number ten).
Perennial top ten finisher the Gershwin Theatre in New York City came in at number three this week. Power scoring a 2.50, the Gershwin is home to the long running Broadway musical, Wicked.
In the top five for eleven weeks running, Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX took the number four spot this week, power scoring a 1.97. Home to the iconic Dallas Cowboys, who have dominated the Top Sports Events rankings for two weeks, the Stadium also plays host to a December 19 game between the popular Texas Longhorns (at number two in Top Sports) and the North Carolina Tar Heels. U2, at number one in this week’s Top Concerts, will play the venue in October.
The Virginia/August Wilson Theatre in New York City showed some staying power, bouncing back from last week’s number eight to number five this week. The home of the hit musical Jersey Boys power scored a 1.67 this week.
The new Yankee Stadium continued to hold at number six this week, power scoring a 1.64. The playoff-bound New York Yankees, are maintaining strong ticket sales to the end, coming in at number three in this week’s Top Sports Events.
Newcomer LandShark Stadium, formerly known as Dolphin Stadium, made its top ten debut at number seven this week. Home to both the Florida Marlins and Miami Dolphins, the Miami Gardens, FL venue has a full schedule in the coming months, hosting the Orange Bowl and the Pro Bowl in January 2010 and the Super Bowl in February 2010. LandShark Stadium finished the week with a power score of 1.25.
For two weeks out of the top ten, the Imperial Theatre in New York City returned this week to take the number eight spot. The Imperial, home to the 2009 Tony Award winning musical Billy Elliot, power scored a 1.18 this week.
Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA held to the bottom of the top ten, this week climbing up one to number nine. The NFL’s home to the Pittsburgh Steelers, at number five this week in Top Sports Events, power scored a 1.15 this week.
The Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN appeared in the top ten for the first time in five weeks, finishing at number ten in the rankings. There’s been much buzz around the Metrodome in recent months as Brett Favre emerged once again from retirement, this time to play QB for the venue’s Minnesota Vikings, and as a result, Vikings ticket sales have been brisk, taking them to number seven in this week’s Top Sports Events. The Metrodome is also home to the MLB’s Minnesota Twins, who hold a strong second place in the AL Central standings. The Metrodome finished the week with a power score of 1.11.
Football stadiums and Broadway theatres rule the top ten this week, with baseball venues all but out of contention and only one indoor concert arena making the cut.
