For Broadway shows on the brink of financial profitability, the Tony Awards can mean boom or bust. Winners get a massive boost of promotion and can reap the benefits of hot sales for months or even years. But falling short can leave a show needing a boost with limited options but to close up shop.

Variety is reporting of two cases of the latter, as the revival of “Six Degrees of Separation” starting Allison Janney and Corey Hawkins announced it will close at the end of the week, and “Sweat” will close a week later on June 25. “Separation” struggled after earning mixed reviews, earning grosses that never exceeded $400,000, dropping down below $300,000 of late. “Sweat” suffered from lacking a star in its ensemble cast, and was pulling in between $250-300,000 per week, per Variety.
