With a sports and entertainment schedule highlighted by some of the summer’s most popular events, Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX claimed the title of number one in TicketNews’s exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, July 19. The stadium is of course home to the legendary Dallas Cowboys, whose ticket sales this week boosted the team up to fifth place in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events rankings. The stadium also is scheduled to host soccer’s Chelsea FC (at number seven in Top Sports Events) in their July 26 match against Club America. In music, the venue will see an August date from Paul McCartney, who took a commanding lead this week in Top Concert Events, and will have U2 (at number four in Top Concerts this week) in October. Dallas Cowboys Stadium finished the week with a power score of 3.51.
Fenway Park was finally toppled from its number one position after four weeks, this week taking the number two. Hometown team the Boston Red Sox also dropped one to the number two spot in this week’s Top Sports Events. In music, the park sees two much anticipated dates on the popular Paul McCartney tour. Fenway power scored a 3.14 this week.
Following Fenway once again in the rankings, the Gershwin Theatre in New York City was the sole theater venue making the top ten this week, coming in at number three. Power scoring a 2.98, the Gershwin is Broadway’s home to the long-running hit musical, Wicked, which this week maintained dominance in Ticketnews’s Top Broadway Events and Top Theater Events, and dropped to second place in this week’s Top Combined Events.
The new Yankee Stadium fell one spot to finish at number four this week. With a power score of 2.87, the Stadium still enjoys robust sales for its New York Yankees, who took number one in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings. Citi Field in Flushing, NY, shot back into the top ten this week, finishing at number five and power scoring a 1.93. The new home to New York Mets baseball opens its first ever musical events season tonight with a performance by Paul McCartney.
Next in the rankings was Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL, which dropped two to take the number six position. Power scoring a 1.78, Wrigley is home field to the popular Chicago Cubs, who kept ticket sales strong this week and held their third place perch in Top Sports Events. In music, Wrigley is in the middle of a two date appearance by Elton John and Billy Joel, whose tour hit at number three in this week’s Top Concerts.
Bank of Oklahoma Center in Tulsa, OK, debuted this week in the number seven spot. The Center has a performance by the American Idols Live tour (at number eight in Top Concerts) this week, Paul McCartney in August, Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler (number ten) in September and the Dave Matthews Band (number five) in October. The venue also claims a spot on the well attended WWE tour in September. The Bank of Oklahoma Center power scored a 1.78 this week.
In at number eight this week was the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY. Down three from last week and power scoring a 1.65, the summer venue has some top sellers still to play in the coming weeks, including two dates by the Dave Matthews Band this week and one by Jimmy Buffet in August.
Back in the top ten after a long hiatus was Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. At number nine, the stadium is home to the popular New England Patriots, who recently settled a three year legal battle with StubHub. In music, the venue will have a date on Kenny Chesney’s tour (at number nine in this week’s Top Concerts) in August as well as two September appearances by U2. Gillette Stadium power scored a 1.52 this week.
Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ closes out the top ten this week, power scoring a 1.46.The stadium is home to the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, popular teams currently onsale with tickets for preseason and season play. In music, the venue will see U2 in late September and then will end their musical events calendar with a five date appearance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band before closing its doors at the end of the 2009 NFL calendar.
Football stadiums join baseball stadiums in the top ten as outdoor concert season is in full swing and the NFL season approaches. After a number of weeks accompanied by other theaters in the top ten, the Gershwin is the only theater venue appearing this week.
