With the presidential inauguration just a week away, plans are starting to heat up for the various celebrations honoring President-elect Barack Obama. The Beastie Boys and Sheryl Crow have signed up to headline the official Rock The Vote Inaugural Gala, dubbed “Hey, America Feels Kinda Cool Again.” Meanwhile, there are two competing Green Inaugural Balls for conscientious revelers. The first, on January 17, features Wyclef Jean, while the other, on January 19, will be produced by Live Earth founder Kevin Wall.
R&B vocalist and songwriter Ne-Yo has two tours coming up: a January tour of the UK with the Pussycat Dolls, and a solo run of the U.S. in February. In other touring news, comedic duo Cheech & Chong have extended their Light UP America tour through spring 2009 with more than 30 additional stand-up performances. Finally, Thievery Corporation will be on the road this winter, as the DJ duo hits North American stages with a 15-member band to support September 2008’s “Radio Retaliation.”

Pennywise has announced an eight-show run in California and Nevada this winter. The punk-pop crew launches the endeavor on January 16 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles before moving out to Las Vegas for a two-night stand at the House of Blues on January 17-18. The remaining gigs fall later next month: February 22 at The Dome in Bakersfield, CA; February 24 at Senator Theater in Chico, CA; February 25 at The New Oasis in Sparks, NV; February 26 at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA; and February 27 at Majestic Ventura Theater in Ventura, CA.
Ben Folds has slightly extended his brief winter 2009 tour. The outing is now set at five shows, beginning February 11 at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ. The remaining shows for the rock pianist’s tour are set for February 14 at Electric Factory in Philadelphia, PA; February 16 at Club Zoon in Pittsburgh, PA; February 17 at Kool Haus in Toronto, ON; and February 21 at LC Pavilion in Columbus, OH. Folds is continuing to support his latest studio album, “Way to Normal.”
Clutch will hit the streets for a winter tour with The Bakerton Group, the rock band’s instrumental jazz alter-ego. The outing begins February 11 at V Club in Huntington, WV, and wraps March 1 at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA. Stops along the way include a February 13 show at The Village in Little Rock, AR, a February 18 gig at Double Door in Chicago, IL, a February 21 concert at The Shelter in Detroit, MI, a February 25 performance at Higher Ground in South Burlington, VT, and a February 28 show at The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale, NY.
Mae has lined up plans for at least 11 performances for winter/spring 2009. The indie rockers will hit the road for a January 31 gig at Smothers Theatre in Malibu, CA, and continue with scattered dates through April 17 at Cabrini College’s Dixon Center in Radnor, PA. Comprised primarily of East Coast dates, the trek also includes a February 13 show at SoZo in State College, PA, a February 21 gig at School of Rock in South Hackensack, NJ, a February 28 set at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA, and a March 1 performance at The Dome in Watertown, NY.
Glenn Tilbrook, cofounder of influential Brit band Squeeze, will be on the road in the U.S. this spring to support his latest solo work with backing band The Fluffers. The 14-date run begins March 18 at The Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale, NY, and closes out on April 3 at HighLine Ballroom in New York, NY. Along the way, the rocker will stops for shows on March 20 at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, CT, March 24 at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville, TN, March 26 at the House of Blues in Chicago, IL, March 31 at World Café Live in Philadelphia, PA, and April 1 at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD.
Dear and The Headlights have outlined a 20-city tour for February and March in support of their September 2008 sophomore release “Drunk Like Bible Times.” The trek launches February 20 with a free show at Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, and wraps with a March 19 SXSW showcase performance at Jackalope in Austin, TX. Other performances on the mostly West Coast tour are booked for February 24 at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles, CA; February 27 at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, CA; March 1 at Satyricon in Portland, OR; March 7 at Marquis Theatre in Salt Lake City, UT; March 12 at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago, IL; and March 17 at Rock Bottom Bar in San Antonio, TX.
