American alternative metal band, Deftones, announced plans for an upcoming 16 date tour starting on October 9 in Ventura, CA.
This tour will precede the release of their seventh studio album “Koi No Yokan,” which will be released on November 13, 2012. Opening for Deftones on the tour will be Scars on Broadway, which was founded by System of a Down members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan. Tickets for the tour went on sale to the general public this past Friday, September 7.
The band has scheduled stops that span the United States, and one night in Vancouver, BC. Some notable stops along the way include Seattle, WA on October 13; Denver, CO October 19; Chicago, IL October 23; and New York, NY where the tour will wrap up on October 30 at Terminal 5.
“Koi No Yokan” was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with producer Nick Raskulinecz who has worked with other popular bands including Rush, Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains. Raskulinecz also helped produce Deftones’ previous album “Diamond Eyes.”
Deftones were founded in Sacramento, CA in 1988 by guitarist Stephen Carpenter, singer Chino Moreno, and drummer Abe Cunningham. Those three were eventually joined by bassist Chi Cheng and have had mainly the same lineup ever since. Since2009, Sergio Vega has been filling in for Cheng on bass after he was injured in a car accident.
In 1995, Deftones released their debut album entitled “Adrenaline.” The album peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard charts, and achieved platinum status in Sept. 2008. Their second album “Around the Fur” released in 1997 and third album “White Pony” released in 2000 have also reached platinum status. Their self-title fourth album which was released in 2003 has achieved gold status, selling over 500,000 units to date. Their two most recent albums “Saturday Night Wrists” (2006) and “Diamond Eyes” (2010) have not seen the same success as past albums. However, this could be due to a decline in the music industry and music sales and not necessarily due to a decline in fan base.
Preceding the tour the band will be performing at a couple of festivals in California. First on September 22, Deftones will be alongside the Stone Temple Pilots and Bush, among others at the Epicenter Festival in Irvine. The next night at the first annual Monster Energy Aftershock Festival they will be joined again by many of the same acts from Epicenter Festival along with Theory of a Deadman, Oleander, and Hell or Highwater.
With this 16-city tour scheduled a month before the new album release, Deftones fans will have a rare opportunity to experience some of the new songs off of “Koi No Yokan” live before the November 13 release date.
