Green Day has announced that it has cancelled all of its club tour dates and has postponed all other shows in January and February.
Tickets that were purchased for shows scheduled from September 26 to December 10, 2012 will all be refunded. For the January and February shows, new dates are expected to be announced soon and all previously purchased tickets will be honored on those new dates.
The majority of shows that were cancelled were scheduled to take place on the west coast. Cities that will not be seeing Green Day as anticipated include: San Francisco, CA; New Orleans, LA; Seattle, WA; Kennewick, WA; Salem, OR; Sacramento, CA; Reno, NV; Santa Cruz, CA; and Tempe, AZ.
The shows that have been postponed were to start on January 7, 2013 in Green Bay, WI and scheduled until February 8 in Las Vegas, NV.
Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong checked into rehab back in late September for multiple substance abuse problems. Reportedly, Armstrong’s entering rehab was a long time coming and fellow band mates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool helped to stage an intervention.
Earlier in the month of September Armstrong was rushed to the hospital, forcing the cancellation of a show in Italy. At the time, he insisted that the hospitalization was simply due to the fact that he lost his voice. Now it appears as if other factors may have contributed to his hospitalization.
Armstrong entered rehab shortly after a public meltdown at the iHeartRadio Music Festival on September 21. Armstrong became upset when festival promoters told him that Green Day’s set would be cut by 25 minutes in order to make room for more musical acts. While the band was performing on stage they received a one minute wrap up warning, after which Armstrong proceeded to lose his temper. During his tirade he yelled multiple expletives into the microphone and even smashed a guitar on stage.
On a happier note for Green Day fans, the release of their new album ¡Tré! has been pushed up to December 11. Originally the album was not scheduled to be released until January 15, 2013. While concert goers will have to wait a bit longer than anticipated to hear Green Day perform live, the albums earlier release may appease fans in the meantime.
Green Day has been playing together since 1987. The band has sold over 65 million albums worldwide and over 25 million albums in the United States. Green Day has won several Grammy Awards including Best Alternative Album for their album Dookie, as well as Best Rock Album for American Idiot and Record of the Year for Boulevard of Broken Dreams .
More recently, the band received recognition for turning their American Idiot album into a hit Broadway musical. The show won two Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design for a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical. “American Idiot” was also nominated for a Best Musical Tony Award. It won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album as well.
