Last autumn, classical-pop vocalist Josh Groban began planning for an upcoming world tour by performing a series of intimate pre-tour concerts in four U.S. cities.

The unusual approach must have worked, because Groban has revealed three initial dates for a 2011 world tour. But despite his international aspirations for the Straight to You Tour, all of Groban’s dates are domestic thus far.

The first revealed concerts are set for May 16 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX; May 25 at Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO; and May 28 at the i wireless Center in Moline, IL. Groban’s official Web site is expected to announce more dates soon.

Tickets for the three Midwest dates will go on sale to the public February 19. Event listings on Ticketmaster.com show the following spread of ticket prices: $55 to $95 in Dallas; $34 to $64 in Kansas City; and $47 to $67 in Moline.

The world tour closely follows Groban’s November 2010 album “Illuminations.” Leading up to the record’s release, the musician also prepared for his next full-scale world tour with a series of intimate U.S. concerts. The four-city “Illuminations” pre-tour was presented as a trial run of song selections and arrangements for what could potentially become the “real” tour’s setlist.

Before last November, the multi-Platinum artist’s last headline venture was in 2007. The two-legged Awake Tour visited more than 70 markets around the world and earned Groban a No. 5 debut on TicketNews’ exclusive Top Events Rankings during the week ending April 29, 2007.
