When the Monty Python team unleashed their hilarious medieval romp Monty Python and the Holy Grail on an unprepared world in 1975, few people suspected that it would resurface as a theater production decades later. But resurface Grail has, albeit in an even funnier form, if that is possible.
Spamalot is directed by Tony Award-winning director Mike Nichols, and has audiences rolling in the aisles like the limbless knights in armor with which the story is littered. Spamalot’s plot follows ancient King Arthur on his historic quest for the Holy Grail, through a fabled landscape where magic and, er, not so magical beings dwell. Arthur recruits several gallant knights to help him find the Grail, such as Sirs Bedevere, Robin, Lancelot and Galahad, and trot on their imaginary steeds into mischief-a-plenty. The gaggle of bizarre characters they meet along the way and the nonsense spouted by these ludicrous creatures leaves audiences chortling in amused disbelief. The French Taunter, Tim the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Killer Rabbit, and the Knights who say Ni, are just a few of those wreaking havoc across England’s green and preposterous land, and Arthur and his merry men must face them all.
