After a week at number two, Madison Square Garden (MSG) once again took over the top spot in TicketNews’s exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, September 13.
The Garden’s popular New York Rangers begin preseason play this week, while its New York Knicks start their preseason in mid-October. In music, MSG will host a date from KISS (at number seven in this week’s Top Concert Events rankings) in October and Metallica (at number four in Top Concerts) in November. MSG finished the week with a power score of 3.23.
As the U.S. Open Tennis Championship wound toward its conclusion this week, the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Corona, NY, dropped one to take the number two spot. The men’s semifinals session of the Open this weekend made it to number five in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events rankings this week. The home to the annual USTA tournament power scored a 2.95.
Up one this week to the number three spot was Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ. With a power score of 2.27, the Stadium will be home for one more season to the New York Giants (at number six in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings) and New York Jets, after which it will close doors. For its final concert performances, the venue will have some choice musical acts, including U2 (holding at number one in Top Concert rankings this week) for two dates in September, and five late September-early October performances from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (up this week to number six in Top Concerts), who close out the stadium’s musical roster.
Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago, IL, appeared in the top ten this week for the first time since late July, landing at number four and power scoring a 1.93. The stadium is home to the Chicago Bears, who took the number nine spot in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings.
Still holding at number five this week was Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX. The Stadium is of course home to the legendary Dallas Cowboys who took the number four spot this week in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events rankings. The venue also will host a game between the Texas Longhorns (at number four this week in Top Sports Events) and the North Carolina Tar Heels on December 19. On January 2, the stadium will have the popular Cotton Bowl. In concerts, U2 will have a stop on its tour at the venue in October. Dallas Cowboys Stadium power scored a 1.93 this week.
As the Major League Baseball season winds down, the new Yankee Stadium held at number six in this week’s rankings, power scoring a 1.83. The Stadium’s New York Yankees, still dominating the AL East rankings, once again took the top position in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events this week.
Next, the Gershwin Theatre in New York City fell in this week’s rankings, down four spots to the number seven position. The Gershwin continues to enjoy robust ticket sales for its hit musical, Wicked, which for the eighth straight week topped TicketNews’s Top Broadway Events, Top Theater Events, and Top Combined Events rankings. The Gershwin power scored a 1.83 this week.
Showing some upward mobility in the rankings was the Virginia/August Wilson Theatre in New York City, which moved up two to land in the number eight spot. The theater is home to the popular Tony Award winning musical, Jersey Boys, which this week took second place in TicketNews’s Top Theater and Top Broadway Events rankings and third place in TicketNews’s Top Combined Events. The Virginia/August Wilson Theatre finished the week with a power score of 1.76.
Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA, dropped two this week to take the number nine spot in the rankings. NFL’s home to the Pittsburgh Steelers, at number two this week in Top Sports Events, power scored a 1.58 this week.
Finally, Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, made its return to the top ten in this week’s rankings, coming in at number ten with a power score of 1.38. The Stadium will see two dates on U2’s popular tour next week, and it is home to the New England Patriots, who finished at number six in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings.
Football stadiums continue their takeover of the top ten this week. The Gershwin is joined by the Virginia/August Wilson Theatre for a total of two theater venues in the top ten.
