'G-Force' able to knock-off 'Harry Potter' and take top spot at the movie box office
Magic was in the air again this weekend, but instead of three young wizards at Hogwarts, audiences flocked to see three young guinea pigs in spy gear. Disney's computer animated "G-Force" debuted at $32.2 million, bumping last week's number one "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" to second place, according to estimates by studio trackers Nielsen EDI.
"G-Force" is an action-adventure spoof of the spy genre, featuring cuddly rodents as trained federal agents capable of understanding human speech and behaviors. Voiced by Penelope Cruz, Tracy Morgan and Sam Rockwell, the film is produced by live-action guru Jerry Bruckheimer and also features the voice of Nicolas Cage. The upset of "Harry Potter "surprised some analysts, but the uber-popular franchise came in a close second with $30 million, bringing the two-week total to a hefty $222 million. This number is expected to grow exponentially this week after an IMAX version is released to 166 screens nationwide.
Meanwhile, Sony's romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth" grabbed third place with a respectable $27 million opening. Warner Bros. premiere of the horror movie "Orphan" took fourth with $12.8 million, while the another family friendly animation film, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs", rounded out the top five with $8.2 million.
Final figures are released on Monday.
