Lack of productions contribute to weak ticket sales on Broadway
Slipping into the fall season, Broadway box office recorded $16,669,047, only slightly stronger than the previous week at $16,139,301. Overall, the gross this year is $298,305,209 compared to $290,882,984 at the same point last year, putting it ahead by 2.6 percent.
Again this week, there were only six productions that reported more than a million in ticket sales. Those productions were Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, The Addams Family at the Lunt-Fontanne, Billy Elliot at the Imperial, Jersey Boys at the August Wilson and Promises, Promises at the Broadway.
"The Addams Family" posted the biggest gain in earnings over the previous week, up $315,194. The musical also posted the highest percent increase in attendance at 15.4 percent. Contrary to its recent success, Mary Poppins at the Amsterdam posted the largest drop dollar wise, going down $76,062 for the week. West Side Story at the Palace posted the largest drop in attendance, down 8.9 percent from last week.
Only "Wicked" exceeded its Gross Gross Potential this week at 103.5 percent. The nearest runner-up was "The Lion King" at 91.4 percent. Just four of the 22 productions reported 95 percent or better audiences: "Wicked," "Jersey Boys," "Billy Elliot" and "A Little Night Music."
Mrs. Warren's Profession, a new play, opened to previews at the American Airlines on September 2, with opening night scheduled for October 3. In its opening week, it posted the Best Buy ticket as suggested by the Average Paid Admission at $41.66.
Theatergoers attending the musical Fela! at the Eugene O'Neill will have the chance to see Patti LaBelle for two nights, September 8 and September 9. The Grammy Award winner will assume the role of Fela's mother, a role currently filled by Tony Award winner Lillias White. White will step back into the role, but will give her final performance on September 12. LaBelle will then resume the role after that through the closing January 2, 2011.
