Madonna concert cancelled following deadly roof collapse
Madonna's July 19 concert at the Velodrome stadium in Marseilles, France has been cancelled after the roof collapsed during the stage construction that left eight crew injured and two dead.
According to the AP, initially an American and a Brit were seriously injured; the killed crew member was French. Five had multiple injuries and two had light injuries. The British worker died later. All of the injured were taken to local hospitals.
Marseille city councilor Maurice Di Nocera said the roof was about two-thirds complete and collapsed gradually.
“Since it did not collapse right away, that allowed several people to get out, to avoid being hit,” he said. In a post on her website, Madonna said, “I am devastated to have just received this tragic news. My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news.”
At the time of the accident, Madonna was on another concert stop in Udine, Italy.
