Randy Newman tour postpones 18 European performances

By Bob Grossweiner & Jane Cohen

Singer-songwriter Randy Newman has postponed his 18-date European tour that was supposed to have started November 1 in Berlin, Germany. Doctor's orders sidelined the performer because of physical limitations and severe pain caused by stenosis in Newman's lower back and neck.

Details of rescheduled dates will be announced shortly.

"I deeply regret not being able to come," said Newman in a statement on his Web site. "I like it so much in Europe and I've always been treated so well. I'll get there as soon as I can."

Newman recently completed a series of U.S. tour dates in September and October, supporting his latest studio record. The critically acclaimed album "Harps and Angels" is his first collection of new material in nine years.

The pianist's best known recordings include "Short People," "I Love L.A" and "I Love to See You Smile." He has had 17 Oscar nominations, only winning one: "If I Didn't Have You" from "Monsters, Inc." for Original Song. He is also the composer of the theme song for "Monk."
