'The Final Destination' holds off the competition at the box office over the holiday weekend
Audiences once again selected a horror film as their choice for the holiday weekend, bringing teen slasher "The Final Destination" its second week on the top of the box office charts, according to estimates from studio trackers Nielsen EDI.
The film grossed $15.4 on its second weekend out, again trumping Quentin Tarantino's critically acclaimed "Inglorious Basterds", which trailed behind "Destination" with $15 million. Experts point to film's move to run in 3-D as key to its success, as the format is popular among the teens that are considered this film's primary audience pool.
Sandra Bullock's latest romantic comedy "All About Steve", about a crossword puzzle creator who follows a television news cameraman who she believes to be her true love across the country, grabbed third place. The film has received largely negative reviews from critics, but was still able to bring in $13.9 million.
"The Gamer", unwinding a saga of a futuristic computer game where real people are used as avatars, premiered to fourth place with $11.2 million. The critically acclaimed sci-fi indie "District 9" chugs along in fifth place with $9 million. Final figures are due on Tuesday.
