Tyler Perry's "Madea Goes to Jail" is tops at the movies for second straight week
Tyler Perry's "Madea Goes to Jail" held the top spot for the second straight weekend with $16.5 million, according to studio estimates from box office tracking firm Nielsen EDI. The cross-dressing comedy has earned $64.8 million, making it Perry's highest-grossing movie after only 10 days.
"Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" debuted to $12.7 million, earning second place at the box office. The film featuring the family of heart throb singers was expected to beat out all competition, much as fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus did last February with a concert film that opened to $31.1 million. Still, the Jonas Brothers had the second-highest debut on record for a concert film, behind only the Hannah Montana movie.
The indie Academy Award darling "Slumdog Millionaire" rose to third place with $12.2 million. The haul is the largest in more than a decade for any movie the weekend after winning the best-picture Oscar. Only "Titanic", which raked in $15.2 million after winning best picture in March 1998, had a bigger Oscar bump.
The Liam Neeson thriller "Taken" was fourth with $9.95 million, bringing its total to $108 million. "He's Just Not That Into You" was fifth with $5.9 million, bringing its overall gross to $78.5 million.
Final figures are due Monday.
