World Series Game 5 to resume Wednesday night
Major League Baseball (MLB) has postponed the remaining innings of Game 5 of the World Series to Wednesday night, October 29, with a start time of 8:37pm, the league announced today.
Game 5 between the Tampa Bay Rays and home team Philadelphia Phillies was suspended in the sixth inning due to heavy rains Monday night, the first time in baseball history that a World Series game has been suspended. Officials had hoped to resume the game tonight, but weather forecasts for the Philadelphia area were too severe.
"While obviously we want to finish Game Five as soon as possible, the forecast for today does not allow for us to continue the game this evening," Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "We are closely monitoring tomorrow's forecast and will continue to monitor the weather on an hourly basis. We will advise fans as soon as we are able to make any final decisions with respect to tomorrow's schedule."
The game is tied 2-2, and the Phillies are leading the best-of-seven series 3-1. And in the meantime, some fans have been selling their ticket stubs for Game 5 on the Web.
MLB has not yet decided the schedule for Games 6 and 7, if they are needed. The games were slated to take place back in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday. Weather will not be a factor for those games because they will take place in Tropicana Field, which is a domed stadium.
