Fenway Park takes the number one spot for the fourth week in a row, according to TicketNews’s exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, July 12. This sustained lead is fueled by two sources. First, Fenway’s own Boston Red Sox had ticket sales strong enough to boost the team to the number one position in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events rankings this week. Second, Fenway enjoyed continued robust sales for two August dates on the Paul McCartney tour, which takes the number two slot in this week’s Top Concert Events rankings. Fenway power scored a 3.52 this week.
Following closely behind Fenway is the Gershwin Theatre in New York City, up one this week to finish in the number two position. The Gershwin has remained a top five contender for the past several weeks due to strong sales for its hit musical Wicked, which again this week topped Ticketnews’s Top Broadway Events, Top Theater Events and Top Combined Events rankings. The Gershwin finished the week with a power score of 3.25.
Next, the new Yankee Stadium came in at number three this week, down one from last week’s rankings. Power scoring a 2.61, the stadium benefited from still impressive ticket sales for the New York Yankees, who slipped just one to take the number two spot in this week’s Top Sports Events.
Holding steady at number four this week, Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL, also had two heavy hitters to thank for its performance. Hometown team the Chicago Cubs kept up the pressure with sales strong enough to hold the team’s third place finish in Top Sports Events. Also, this week Wrigley has a two date appearance by the very popular Elton John and Billy Joel tour, which held firm at number six in this week’s Top Concert Events. Wrigley Field had a power score this week of 1.83.
Also holding this week was the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, staying strong in the number five position. Power scoring a 1.69, the outdoor amphitheatre this week saw a performance by Nickelback, Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Abel (at number seven in Top Concerts this week) and will have two dates by the Dave Matthews Band (at number five in Top Concerts) next week.
Next, Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ moved back into the top ten, landing in the number six position. The stadium will see powerhouse rockers U2 (at number three this week in Top Concerts) in September and will have a five date appearance by the legendary Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in late September and early October. Springsteen’s performances will the be the last musical events ever held at Giants Stadium, which will close its doors following this year’s NFL season. Until then, Giants Stadium remains home field to both the New York Giants and New York Jets, NFL teams currently selling their preseason and season tickets. The stadium power scored a 1.57 this week.
The Imperial Theatre in New York City dropped down one to take the number seven slot in venues this week. Power scoring a 1.51, the Imperial is home to the 2009 Tony Award winning musical Billy Elliot, which took second place in this week’s Top Broadway Events, third in Top Theater Events, and tenth in Top Combined Events.
Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, returned to the top ten this week, finishing in the number eight spot. With a power score of 1.50, the stadium is home to Dallas Cowboys football, at number seven in this week’s Top Sports Events. In other sports, the stadium will host Chelsea FC vs. Club America in soccer later this month. In music, the venue has booked Paul McCartney in August and U2 in October.
Newcomer Mandalay Bay – Events Center in Las Vegas, NV, arrived in the number nine position this week. Mandalay Bay has a number of top sellers booked this season, including the Jonas Brothers and Green Day in August, as well as Britney Spears for two dates in September. Mandalay Bay power scored a 1.42 this week.
The Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, CA fell two to land at number ten this week. With a power score of 1.40, the Orpheum stays in the top ten on strong ticket sales for its long-running west coast production of Wicked.
Sports stadiums, especially those that double as outdoor concert venues, remained popular this week. Representing theater, the Gershwin, the Imperial and the Orpheum remain in the top ten for one more week.
