Paul McCartney, Boston Red Sox tickets take Fenway Park to number one venue once again
TicketNews has released its exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, July 5, and Fenway Park in Boston, MA claims the number one spot for the second week in a row. Strong ticket sales for the upcoming Paul McCartney tour, once again at number one in TicketNews’s Top Concert Events rankings this week, help to keep the Park high in the venues rankings as its two August dates with the rocker approach. The Boston Red Sox assisted as well, with ticket sales strong enough to keep the team at number two in TicketNews’s Top Sports Events this week. Fenway Park power scored an impressive 5.84.
The new Yankee Stadium moved up one in the rankings this week to take the number two spot behind Fenway. Power scoring a 3.69, the Stadium benefits from extremely strong ticket sales for its New York Yankees, who once again dominate the Top Sports Events rankings this week.
Power scoring a 3.17 this week, the Gershwin Theatre in New York City dropped one from last week to land in the number three position. The Gershwin has had great performances week after week due to continued robust sales for its hit musical Wicked, which once again led Ticketnews’s Top Broadway Events, Top Theater Events and Top Combined Events rankings.
Next in the rankings, Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL, made a big move this week, up three to the number four position. Hometown favorites and perennial underdogs the Chicago Cubs keep up the ticket sales to maintain their hold on third place in this week’s in Top Sports Events. Wrigley also has two July dates on the popular Elton John and Billy Joel tour, which moved up from number nine to number six in Top Concerts this week.
Holding steady at number five in this week’s venues rankings was the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY. Power scoring a 1.58 this week, the summer venue has several top-selling acts scheduled for the coming weeks, including Nickelback, Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Abel (at number ten in Top Concerts this week) on July 15 and the Dave Matthews Band (at number eight in Top Concerts) on July 21 and 22.
The Imperial Theatre in New York City showed staying power this week, moving up two to claim the number six spot. The Imperial has enjoyed a boost to ticket sales for its musical Billy Elliot after the production garnered several Tony awards in June. The theater power scored a 1.54 this week.
The Arthur Ashe Stadium in Corona, NY returned to the top ten this week after a one week hiatus, finished at number seven. Power scoring a 1.43, the Stadium is home to the very popular US Open Tennis Championship, which runs from late August to early September. The final theater venue in the top ten this week, the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, CA, showed some upward mobility, getting up to number eight from last week’s number ten position. Home to a long-running west coast production of “Wicked”, the Orpheum power scored a 1.42 this week.
Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ also returned to the top ten this week after one week away, finishing in the number nine spot. With a power score of 1.32, the stadium is preparing for two blockbuster performers later this year, U2 in for two dates in late September and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for five dates in late September and early October. Springsteen’s appearances will be the final musical events ever to be held at the stadium, which will close at the end of this year’s NFL season. In sports, the venue is scheduled to host first round play for the Concacaf Gold Cup in international football (American soccer) on July 26. Giants Stadium also is home to popular New York area NFL teams the New York Giants and New York Jets, currently selling tickets to their preseason and regular season games.
Rounding out the top ten this week, Coors Field entered the list in the tenth position with a power score of 1.29. Coors Field is home to the Colorado Rockies baseball team, whose ticket sales boosted them into fourth place in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings.
Sports stadiums and some other outdoor venues stayed strong this week. Theater venues make up nearly a third of the top ten, with the Gershwin, the Imperial and the Orpheum all having solid performances this week. As NFL preseason approaches, look for more football stadiums to make their returns to the top ten.
TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales for venues from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world's largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given venue's category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales for a venue, and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare venues within a particular category.
