Altar Boyz is an Off-Broadway musical based on an idea by Marc Kessler and theatre producer Ken Davenport. The 90-minute show made its stage debut in September 2004 at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. It began an open-ended run at New World Stages on March 1, 2005, and performances are staged daily. Altar Boyz is a real-time satire following members of a fictitious Christian boy band during one of their concerts, though some scenes also explore the group's origins. The show has been nominated for various awards and won the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical, as well as the 2006 and 2007 Audience Favorite Award from Broadway.com.
