Aretha Franklin

Born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee and referred to as “The Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin is a famous singer, songwriter and pianist who became popular in the 60’s. Out of her 20 number one singles that made it on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart, two of them topped the Billboard Hot 100 at the number one spot, “Respect” (1967) and “I Knew You Were Waiting” (1987). A total of 45 singles of hers made it on the “Top 40” hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well.

Franklin’s talent and fame was also proven in 1987 when she became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has a total of 20 Grammy Awards to her name to date and in 2008 was ranked number one on Rolling Stone’s The Greatest Singers of All Time list. Aretha’s success continues even to this day, as she was the featured singer at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration for Barack Obama.

Dave Stewart, Aretha Franklin headline Nelson Mandela concert in NYC

Dave Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Josh Groban, TLC, Cyndi Lauper and Jesse McCartney are among the artists tapped to perform at former South African president and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday on July 18 at Madison Square Garden when New York City hosts the first Mandela Day event.

The all-star event, drawing many from the Hollywood community, is the culmination of a week's activities celebrating Mandela Day. Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chris Chameleon and many others will also perform.

Jazz Fest announces lineup of Aretha Franklin, Dave Matthews Band, more

Aretha Franklin, Dave Matthews Band, James Taylor, Diana Krall, Billy Joel and the Neville Brothers are among the stellar line-up of performers booked for the 40th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival from April 24-26 and April 30-May 3. The festival is returning to its original seven-day format over two weekends after being scaled back to six days after New Orleans was flooded from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Also set to perform are Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Buffett, Bonnie Raitt, Kings of Leon, The O'Jays, Sugarland, Pete Fountain, Erykah Badu, Joe Cocker, Ben Harper, Earth Wind and Fire, Wilco, Tim McGraw, Santana, the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band and many others.

Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana are slated to headline a concert to raise money to build a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall.
