A Canadian with an attitude, singer-songwriter and guitarist Avril Lavigne premiered in 2002 with her breakthrough album "Let Go." Five of her pop/ punk/ rock style songs have topped the charts since then including "Complicated," "Sk8er Boi," and her most recent hit "Girlfriend" which also appeared on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 list. While earlier in her career Lavigne was known for her punk-rock tomboy style, she now dons a more feminine gothic style. Although she herself does not approve of the title, she has often been considered the "anti-Britney" as some consider her to have a less-commercial/ main-stream image than pop-icon Britney Spears.
Lavigne's latest concert tour in 2008 entitled "The Best Damn Tour" hit some road blocks including Lavigne developing laryngitis, causing some cancellations in the North America and Spain. Additionally, the Malaysian stint of the tour caused controversy due to concerns from the conservative Malaysian government that her image was "too sexy."
Show will go on in Malaysia for Avril Lavigne tour
Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne has been given the green light to go ahead with her August 29 concert in Kuala Lumpur at the Stadium Merdeka.
Original reports suggested that the performance was canceled by the conservative Malaysian government, which deemed the singer’s image “too sexy.”
Malaysian government cuts concert from Avril Lavigne tour
Artists, particularly female artists from Western nations, need to think twice about booking shows in Malaysia. Avril Lavigne's August 29 concert in Kuala Lumpur at the Stadium Merdeka was canceled by the Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry since her performance and dress "may taint the Muslim-majority country's independence day celebrations after the Islamic opposition slammed her show as being too sexy," according to the Associated Press. The show was scheduled for two days before the country's independence day celebration.
The country has what western artists feel may be repressive rules and regulations for performances. Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.
Avril Lavigne tour adds six dates in China
Avril Lavigne is taking her Best Damn Tour 2008 to China this fall. The Canadian rocker has confirmed a string of six Chinese concerts beginning on September 26 in Macao at the Venetian Arena and ending October 6 in Beijing at Wukesong Arena.
Lavigne has toured to China before, but only briefly. In 2007, she performed in Shanghai at the Qizhong Tennis Center, followed by another show in Hong Kong. This tour will be her first full-production in China, featuring sophisticated stage settings and an upgraded collection of songs from her three previous albums, including "Innocence," "Keep Holding On" and "Forgotten."
Avril Lavigne postpones more shows
Avril Lavigne, who recently canceled two concerts in Phoenix, AZ and San Diego, CA, has just postponed six more shows of her North American The Best Damn Tour due to acute laryngitis. The newly postponed shows represent the final U.S. shows on this leg of her tour.
The pop-punk singer/songwriter had already performed 37 concerts on the tour, and has at least 49 shows left, including more than 30 dates in Europe. The second leg of her U.S. tour is scheduled to kick off in late July when she's slated to play several summer dates with the Jonas Brothers.
Avril Lavigne has laryngitis, cancels shows
Canadian punk rocker Avril Lavigne joins fellow vocal casualties Alicia Keys and Jordin Sparks, all of whom have had to cancel recent shows due to voice problems.
Lavigne was forced to cancel back-to-back shows, April 30 at Cox Arena in San Diego and May 1 at Cricket Wireless Pavilion in Phoenix, AZ, due to a bout of laryngitis.
Jonas Brothers joining Avril Lavigne's upcoming tour
Live Nation has confirmed that the Jonas Brothers will be joining Avril Lavigne's Best Damn Tour 2008. Lavigne’s tour already has Boston-based group Boys Like Girls in the special guest slot, but Live Nation did not say what the Jonas Brothers' billing will be.
What makes this yet-to-be announced late addition to the Lavigne package so unusual is that the tour was announced on Nov. 6 and starts March 5. The Jonas Brothers, recently signed to Live Nation for two years of touring, have been out on their own headlining tour, which has been a hot ticket and selling out everywhere. The three brothers started their tour Jan. 31, with dates through March. 22. It is unknown when the trio will join Lavigne's tour.
