Beastie Boys are an American rap-rock trio that rose to popularity with their 1986 hit debut "Licensed to Ill," which topped the Billboard 200. Drummer Michael "Mike D" Diamond, bassist Adam "MCA" Yauch and guitarist Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz share vocal duties, often handing off songs mid-verse. Within the past decade, the group has worked with a fourth member, Michael "Mix Master Mike" Schwartz, who works the turntables and provides samples within songs. Though the Beasties have not toured extensively in recent years, they are a popular arena act internationally and have sold out many performances before, including their entire 1995 North American arena tour. When they do tour, they are a popular headline act to book for summer festivals due to the high energy of their performances and blend of music genres.

The event was founded and produced by Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment.
This year’s event marks the only 2009 festival appearances by Springsteen and Phish. Phish will play two shows – a full two-set performance as well as an additional late-evening set. Many of the organizers of Phish’s multi-day camping festivals were brought on to help with the creation of Bonnaroo in 2002 and continue to play a major role in the festival today.
