Bonnaroo 2009 sees attendance increase over last year's festival totals
The 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, held June 11-14 in Manchester, TN, did not sell out but was deemed a success by its promoters Superfly Presents and A.C. Entertainment. They say the festival attracted nearly 80,000 fans, while The New York Times and other media outlets had it at about 75,000 concertgoers, possibly based on early estimations.
Attendance, however, was higher than last year when it was just over 70,000, according to published reports. "Considering the current economic situation, we feel incredibly fortunate to be in this position," said Superfly's Rick Farman in a statement. "We don't take anything for granted."

Other musicians added include reggae artists The Itals and Wailing Souls, African musicians Amadou & Mariam, underground rapper Murs, metal bangers Shadows Fall and High on Fire, R&B ingénue Janelle Monáe, electronic soul duo Pretty Lights, bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice, and indie-world buzz bands Passion Pit, Hockey and White Rabbits.
Bruce Springsteen, Phish, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails headline Bonnaroo
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, Phish, the Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, Al Green, David Byrne, Snoop Dogg, Elvis Costello and Erykah Badu are among the initial round of artists confirmed for the eighth annual installment of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, June 11-14 in Manchester, TN. The event was founded and produced by Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment.
This year’s event marks the only 2009 festival appearances by Springsteen and Phish. Phish will play two shows – a full two-set performance as well as an additional late-evening set. Their appearance also holds special significance since the group has performed at the festival in various incarnations over the years, and their own festivals were one of the major inspirations for the creation of Bonnaroo and its operational strategies. Many of the organizers of Phish’s multi-day camping festivals were brought on to help with the creation of Bonnaroo in 2002 and continue to play a major role in the festival today.
