Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1953, Chaka Khan is a Grammy-winning American singer-songwriter who was also known as “The Queen of Funk Soul.” Getting an early start to her career, Chaka Khan formed her first group, the Crystalettes, at the age of eleven. Before beginning her solo career, Khan established herself as an artist as the featured vocalist in the band Rufus that produced the hit songs, “Tell Me Something Good,” “Everlasting Love,” and “Stay”. During her solo career she was best known for her hit singles, “I’m Every Woman,” “Ain’t Nobody,” “Through the Fire.”
Her success as an artist today is still very much in tact, having released “Funk This” in 2007 that sold over 35,000 copies in its first week of release. In early 2006, she signed with Sony BMG’s new label Burundy Records, and she was named the roll of Sofia on Broadway’s show, “The Color Purple,” that opened in early 2008.

Chaka Khan with the George Duke Trio has replaced Etta James as the headline act at George Wein's Jazz Festival 55 on August 7 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino in Newport, RI. James has cancelled her run of August appearances due to illness. James also cancelled some spring concerts earlier this year.
Hosted by radio announcer Ron Della Chiesa, the festival will retain its original opening act by Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen with guitarist Howard Alden in a salute to Benny Goodman.
Chaka Khan: Funk This

Chaka Khan this week released her first album of new studio music in over 10 years, and the musical legend will embark on a new tour Sunday, Sept. 30 in Los Angeles in support of the new album, called “Funk This.” The CD was produced by Grammy-winning producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and embodies the funky soul of her musical roots with Rufus and her signature passionately-honest vocal styles that make her solo career timeless.
The collection includes fresh renditions of Prince's "Sign 'O' the Times;" a duet with Michael McDonald on "You Belong To Me," a song he co-wrote with Carly Simon; Joni Mitchell's "Ladies' Man; " Jimi Hendrix's "Castle Made Of Sand; " the soul classic "Foolish Fool;" and Rufus medley of "Pack'd My Bags" and "You Got The Love."
The album's originals include the ballad "Disrespectful," a duet with Mary J. Blige, and the disc’s first single "Angel" just entered the Top 10 on the Billboard Urban AC radio chart making this her first top 10 R&B radio hit in over 10 years.
Khan helped form the Chicago, IL-based Ask Rufus in 1971, and after their moniker was shortened to just Rufus, they had their first big hit, "Tell Me Something Good," in 1974. The group's name quickly became Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. After a few more successful singles, Khan released her first solo album in 1978, and then the group was called Rufus & Chaka. Khan has been a solo artist for more than two decades.
