Deftones is an American alternative metal band that formed in the late 1980s and made its major label debut in 1995 with "Adrenaline." The band's biggest breakthrough came in 2000 with the summer release of "White Pony," which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In all, the band released six albums from 1995 to 2006, and headlined various tours across North America.
After beginning work on the band's seventh album, bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a severe car accident in November 2008 that left him in a coma. While Cheng was originally expected to recover according to a doctor's assessment made after the first 72 hours following his accident, he remains in a "minimally-conscious state" due to several health setbacks and infections. The band announced that it would resume recording and touring with a replacement, though Deftones remain actively involved in a charity maintained by Cheng's family that helps pay for the musician's ongoing medical treatment.
Alice in Chains, Deftones, Mastodon tour for 'BlackDiamondSkye' this fall
Hard rock heavyweights Alice in Chains, Deftones and Mastodon are teaming up for a fall tour of North America. The BlackDiamondSkye Tour name, appropriately, is an amalgamation of each group's most recent studio album: "Black Gives Way to Blue" by Alice in Chains, the upcoming "Diamond Eyes" by Deftones, and "Crack the Skye" by Mastodon.
The hefty billing will be on the road together from September 16 at Chart One Pavilion in Chicago, IL, through October 16 at The Joint in Las Vegas, NV. More concerts will be announced in the near future.

A total of 13 shows are booked at the moment, beginning October 10 at White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, WA, and ending October 31 at Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas, NV.
Deftones tour dates and recording resume as Chi Cheng continues recovery
While bassist Chi Cheng continues his long recovery from a late November car accident, his bandmates in alternative metal band Deftones are now trying to resume touring and recording in his absence.
The group returned to the concert circuit this year with an April 5 performance at Bamboozle Left in Irvine, CA. The Deftones are following that performance with more time in the studio and an August tour of several major European festivals. Full details of the Deftones' itinerary are listed below.
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng still in coma, expected to recover
A little more than a week after his car accident, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is still in a coma, but is in stable condition and expected to recover.
"The critical 72 hours has passed and his condition is stable," vocalist Chino Moreno wrote on the Deftones's official blog update earlier this week. "His doctor is expecting a recovery but wants to continue to sedate him and keep him quiet. He was trying to fight even in his coma."
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng in coma after accident
Chi Cheng, bassist for Sacramento-based Deftones, is in a coma following a November 3 car accident in Santa Clara, CA. The 38-year-old was admitted to the intensive care unit at a San Jose hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition according to published reports.
Yesterday (November 4) afternoon, Deftones vocalist and guitarist Chino Moreno confirmed the reports in a note on the band's official blog. "It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night," Moreno wrote, adding that he was on his way to the hospital to meet with friends and family who had already arrived.
