Football

In the United States, the sport of football has grown into the most popular sport overtaking, in most people's eyes, baseball as 'America's Favorite Pastime'. On game day, millions of fans head to stadiums across the country and create an event unlike any other sport.

The college football regular season and postseason has become a huge money maker for the NCAA, the schools and also the ticketing industry. Division I schools from the major conferences typically sell-out stadiums for all their home games, with attendance figures typically over 100,000. When these schools qualify for the postseason, including a possible national championship game, demand for tickets skyrockets and prices on the secondary market often follow suit.

The NFL is similar as fans come out in huge numbers to follow their hometown teams. While the regular season is huge, the NFL Playoffs bring everything to a new level. As each round passes, demand and ticket prices increase until it culminates at the championship game, the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is the biggest event in sports with billions of fans watching the game on television. Ticket prices for the Super Bowl will often rival the most expensive tickets for any event during that calendar year.

NFL looks to improve fan experience with Wi-Fi

By Jerry Beach

The National Football League has tried for decades to bring the stadium experience to its television broadcasts. Now it wants to make fans at stadiums feel as if they are in their living rooms.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told ProFootballTalk.com this week that he wants to make free and easily accessible Wi-Fi a staple at every NFL stadium so that fans can surf the Internet as easily as they would at home.

Possible suspension of 2013 NFL Pro Bowl

By Clenaure Carter

On April 26th 2012, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the possibility of suspending the 2013 NFL Pro Bowl as a result of the low quality shown in the 2012 Pro Bowl. The lack of competition during the game is reflected through high criticism from fans and declining viewership ratings.

The Pro Bowl has consistently drawn in a large audience but not enough to call it a money maker for the NFL. According to Nielsen, the 2012 Pro Bowl recorded an 8.1% drop in ratings when compared to the 2011 Pro Bowl, which drew in 12.4 million viewers. The highest television audience recorded was 13.5 million during the 1997 contest.

BCS recommends four-team playoff for 2014

By Justin Goicochea

After the conclusion of a three day meeting in south Florida, 11 Football Bowl Subdivision conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director Jack Swarbrick announced Thursday, April 26 that they would recommend a four-game playoff system for the 2014 season. Other proposals of both eight-team and 16-team playoffs have been eliminated from consideration.

College football fans can rejoice in the fact that officials have now publicly mentioned a playoff system, but there is still much more that needs to be discussed going into the scheduled meeting with BCS officials in June. Conference commissioners now have the task of returning to their respective universities and discuss the specifics mainly where and when the playoff games would take place and how the rankings would be decided.

Ticketmaster extends NFL Ticket Exchange contract

By Jean Henegan

On April 6, 2012, the NFL and Ticketmaster announced that the two organizations had signed a five-year extension on their popular "NFL Ticket Exchange" site. Ticketmaster, a subsidiary of LiveNation Entertainment, hosts several ticket exchange sites for various sporting and entertainment organizations. Launched in 2008, the NFL Ticket Exchange has more than quadrupled in size. It is also currently the only official ticket exchange of the NFL. Additional ticket exchanges include a site for the NHL (which serves as the official ticket exchange for the league), various NBA teams, several college football bowl games, and the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, Phoenix Mercury, and Seattle Storm.

The NFL Ticket Exchange allows fans to buy and sell tickets to upcoming games, while ensuring that the tickets will be authentic. NFL Ticket Exchange ensures authenticity through validation from Ticketmaster, in conjunction with each ticket being re-issued "with new bar codes through TicketFast®, Ticketmaster's electronic ticket delivery system." Similar to other ticket exchange sites, like the perennial powerhouse StubHub, NFL Ticket Exchange exists in a free market mold, allowing fans to set their own price for the resold tickets.

NFL rule changes shouldn't impact ticket sales

By Jerry Beach

The fans watching a game at home won't be impacted by the rule changes that the NFL implemented at its annual meetings in Florida on March 28, 2012. But those sitting in the stands at mostly sold-out stadiums around the U.S. this coming season are likely to be confused by at least a couple of the alterations, if not downright annoyed.

Instant replay will be further emphasized now that all turnovers will be automatically reviewed by the booth official, while the modified sudden death overtime format, which was previously utilized only for the playoffs — and which famously made its debut when the Denver Broncos stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers on the first play of the extra session in an AFC wild card game January 8, 2012 — will now apply for regular season games as well.

With Manning joining Broncos, Tebow dealt to Jets

By Patrick Dunne

Peyton Manning barely had time to try on his new orange No. 18 jersey before the Denver Broncos created more NFL shockwaves by trading Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.

A day after welcoming future Hall of Famer Manning to Denver, which turned Tebow into a one-year wonder as the Broncos starting quarterback, Tebow and a seventh-round draft pick were shipped to the Jets for a fourth-round and a sixth-round pick.

Four NFL teams are raising ticket prices for next season

By Patrick Dunne

Four NFL teams that made the playoffs last season — including three that ended long postseason droughts — have raised ticket prices for next season.

The Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans each announced price increases earlier this month. The Broncos are coming off their first playoff appearance since 2006, the Lions their first since 1999, and the Texans their first in their 10-year history.

The Broncos are raising prices for the first time in three years. While about 45,000 seats at Sports Authority Field in Denver will increase $2 to $15, nearly 16,000 club seats will decrease in price from $30 to $25. A red zone club seat will drop from $340 to $315 and a gray zone club seat from $280 to $250. The result of the changes is an overall price increase of 0.6 percent. The Broncos' average ticket price of $76.75 was 10th in the 32-team NFL last season.
