Though just an exhibition team, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team is one of the best known sports organizations in the world. The origins of the Globetrotters trace back to 1926 and have grown to an entertainment juggernaut.
Centered on family entertainment, the Globetrotters use both incredible athleticism and slapstick comedy. Through tradition and quality, the past few years have been record setting for the team. In 2009, they broke a single game team record for paid tickets for their February 15 appearance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Millions of fans have entered the turnstiles to see the Globetrotters and over the next few years millions more will.
Harlem Globetrotters setting box office records
The Harlem Globetrotters, the most famous basketball team in the world having played in 120 countries and on six continents, have shattered box office records on the 2009 Spinning the Globe World Tour with 29 new box office marks through its first eight weeks.
On February 15 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, the team set an all-time Globetrotters’ record for the highest number of single-game paid tickets for any and all shows in the historic 83 years of the Globetrotters franchise.
Globetrotters set North American records
The Harlem Globetrotters' 2008 Magic As Ever Tour broke North American records with a nearly 5 percent increase in gross tour revenue, set all-time levels for merchandise sales, hit television ratings highs and exponentially increased online traffic, re-establishing the Globetrotters as a worldwide entertainment powerhouse. The Globetrotters’ storied arch rivals, the Washington Generals, returned after a 12-year hiatus to compete in an exciting new show.
The 241-game tour attracted close to 2 million people in 203 cities in 45 states, Washington, D.C. and four Canadian provinces. They set records for gross ticket sales at New York’s Madison Square Garden and in several other venues in major cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Orlando and Charlotte.
Harlem Globetrotters Score a Touchdown with Latest Hire

The Harlem Globetrotters have appointed Peter LaPointe, a 14-year veteran of the National Football League, as the team’s new senior vice president, Sponsorship Sales.
“Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team,” said Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider in a statement. “He will help tremendously in our efforts to build upon the Globetrotters’ unrivaled brand heritage and push us into new and complementary revenue streams. We are extremely pleased and lucky to have him on board.”
LaPointe has spent the past eight years working on the development of the NFL’s international business, where he was the senior director of Global Sponsorship, overseeing the business development and corporate partnership activities for the NFL’s international offices in Toronto, Mexico City, London, Tokyo, and China. . .
