“Legally Blonde” takes to the road
The hit Broadway musical Legally Blonde will begin a national tour on Sept. 23 at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence, RI. The musical is based on the 2001 Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy of the same name, and on Broadway, the show consistently ranked among the top 20 productions on the Great White Way. The show will be on the road for a year, finishing up its run in Costa Mesa, CA in September 2009.
Jerry Mitchell, a Tony-Award winning choreographer who directed the Broadway show, will direct and choreograph the upcoming tour as well. The book is by Heather Hach and the score is by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin. The MTV version of musical was a hit when it aired on Oct. 13, 2007, attracting a young audience.

Legally Blonde joined the ranks of No. six on the list of highest grossing productions on Broadway this past week with $1,006,075 and 89% capacity. The others in order were: Wicked $1,480,955 at 100% capacity; The Lion King $1,311,914 at 100%; Mary Poppins $1,223,430 at 100%; Jersey Boys $1,21,550 at 100%; and Beauty and the Beast $1,041,283 at 100% capacity.
Broadway’s ticket sales logged in at $19,838,011 this past week, improved over the previous week’s report of $18,697,151, an increase of 10.2% compared to the same time last season with an overall 10.6% increase in attendance.
Looking at the capacity of all Broadway theatres, they were filled to 90.13% this past week. Once again, Deuce was the only production struggling with just $165,085 in ticket sales and achieving only 40% of its capacity. . .
"Legally Blonde" Only Fitfully Entertaining

The lavish show (reportedly with a more than $12 million price tag) has energy to spare, a forward motion provided by ace director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell that simply refuses to quit. And a plot, based on the Amanda Brown novel and the 2001 Reese Witherspoon movie, that is more than serviceable...
