THEATRE REVIEW: 'The Little Mermaid' offers Off-Broadway fun for the family
Children's theatre company Literally Alive, now in residence at the Players Theatre in New York City, brings another classic piece of literature to life with its current production of "The Little Mermaid." The show opened February 5 and runs through May 22.
Based on the original Hans Christian Andersen story, "The Little Mermaid" is here revised for the stage with original music by Michael Sgouros, and book and lyrics by Brenda Bell. Like its source material, the bittersweet musical explores topics of sacrifice and the human soul. But with a nice balance of seriousness and silliness, "The Little Mermaid" is never out of the depth of its intended (young) audience.

With nearly 95,000 seats sold in 47 performances, this pre-Broadway engagement has been one of the most highly attended events in DCPA history and the most successful out-of-town tryout for Disney Theatrical Productions ever. Its final performance was Sept. 9
Broadway previews will begin Nov. 3 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, with an official opening on Dec. 6. The Little Mermaid, based on the Disney film and the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. . .
