Every year, each team in the National Basketball Association has one goal, and that is to make to the NBA Finals. The NBA's championship round is a place were legendary players make history forever cementing their legacy. Bill Russell is known for his eleven NBA Championships with the Boston Celtics, Michael Jordan is revered for his six with the Chicago Bulls and Magic Johnson is remembered for his great performances in the Finals. Just like those players and the dozens more who have made a name in the NBA, basketball fans look forward to series every year.
Along with the Super Bowl and World Series, the NBA Finals are one of the highest grossing events in sports. That is particularly the case when teams in major markets qualify. The most common match-up has been the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers who have met in the NBA Finals 11 times as of 2009, most recently in the 2008 Finals. In that series ticket prices on the secondary ticket market reached all time highs on major resale sites including TicketNetwork, RazorGator and StubHub.
Currently the Celtics hold the record for most NBA Finals Championships with 17, followed by the Lakers who have 14, but hold the record for appearances with 29.
Stanley Cup beats NBA Finals on ticket resale market
An NBA Finals matchup between one market known for sizzle, stars and bandwagon jumpers and another famous for being awash in oil money is good news for ticket brokers. But a bicoastal, international NHL Stanley Cup battle between similarly championship-starved cities has been even better for business.
According to figures provided by ticket search engine SeatGeek, the prices on the resale market for tickets to the Stanley Cup — pitting the Boston Bruins against the Vancouver Canucks — are far higher than those for the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks.
NBA Finals ticket sales take Staples Center to the top of the venue rankings
According to TicketNews’ exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, June 6, the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, grabbed the title of number one venue this week, jumping five spots from last week’s number six position.
As the NBA Finals got into full swing this week, Staples had hosting duties for both games one and two of the series between its Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. Currently the teams are tied at 1-1 in a series which landed at number one (for Lakers tickets) in TicketNews’ Top Sports Events this week.
NBA Finals tickets going for much less than last year
Last season, the NBA got its dream match-up when the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers rekindled their rivalry in the NBA Finals, a match-up that benefited the secondary ticket market as well. This season's ideal scenario was supposed to be Lakers vs. Cavaliers, but the Orlando Magic spoiled those plans and tickets prices on the secondary market may have taken a hit as a result.
According to data as of June 4 provided by StubHub, the average ticket price for the four games in Los Angeles are down 20 percent from last season going from $884 to $678. For the potential three games in Orlando, tickets are selling for an average of $442. Last year in Boston, tickets went for slightly more than $700.
Hundreds of seats unavailable for Magic NBA Finals games
While patient Orlando Magic fans have waited almost 15 years since the last time the team was in the NBA Finals, not all of them will be able to see the team live when games shift to Amway Arena in the city.
Because the arena doesn't have a press box, the team is forced to reclaim hundreds of seats that will go to members of the press who are covering the championship. About 200 countries are sending press representatives to cover the finals between the Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Blink-182, NBA Finals tickets on sale throughout the week
Tickets to catch the upcoming concerts from Blink-182 as well as tickets for the upcoming NBA Finals are on sale throughout the week ending June 6 as compiled by Ticket News.
This week’s onsales begin today with tickets for the upcoming NBA Finals match-up between the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers. Additional tickets for the Lakers home games are on sale this morning. However, Magic fans will have to wait until Saturday to snag tickets to the Orlando home games. Football fans will want to take note that New England Patriots tickets for the 2009 season go on sale Thursday morning.
All time high prices on NBA Finals tickets
It comes as no surprise that this year's NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Lakers have garnered much more attention than any of those in previous years. With a rivalry over 50 years deep, die hard fans have made it one of the most difficult tickets to get in sports. Even though ticket prices in Los Angeles dropped over the weekend, the amount of money paid by fans to attend the games have grown overall.
Information from the TicketNetwork inventory showed that the average order size is more than $1,500. That is an increase of almost 50 percent over last year's finals which saw the San Antonio Spurs sweep the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games.
NBA Finals tickets: Lakers, Celtics high prices are dropping
If you have watched even a minute of this year's NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, you have heard all about the history as well as all about the great players and games of the past. You've seen the celebrities from Denzel Washington to Jack Nicholson, Spike Lee to Steven Spielberg. And if you have tried to get tickets to the Staples Center to see a game in person, you have definitely seen the huge prices they are going for.
"I've seen nothing like this in the nine years since we've opened," Lee Zeidman, general manager for the Staples Center, told the Los Angeles Daily News. "Because of the history of these two teams ... the demand is phenomenal."
