“Shrek, The Musical,” is a Broadway show based on the 2001 movie “Shrek,” which won an Oscar for best animated feature. The musical follows the story of a large green ogre named Shrek as he and his donkey sidekick rescue a princess and return her to her suitor, while encountering several familiar fairy tale characters along the way.
“Shrek” was originally performed at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in August 2008 and moved to Broadway in November of the same year. The show has received positive reviews and has since been nominated for several Tony awards, including Best Musical, and won the Tony award for Best Costume Design of a Musical. “Shrek” is slated to begin a national tour in June 2010 in Chicago.
Shrek, The Musical, Headed for the Broadway Stage
The World Premiere of Shrek, The Musical, will take place on the stage of The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle August 14 to September 21. It is scheduled to arrive on Broadway in November. This is the first project for legitimate theater by DreamWorks Animation, following in the footsteps of, and in competition with, Disney’s successful projects such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.
