StubHub is the largest secondary ticket company, and the second-largest overall ticket seller, according to TicketNews's exclusive industry rankings. The company bills itself as the "world's largest ticket marketplace," where fans can buy and sell tickets sports, concert, theater and other live entertainment events.
The company's customer base is vast, comprising tens of thousands of consumers and brokers. StubHub was launched in 2000, and while it didn't invent the secondary ticket market, it has gone a long way to legitimize it. In 2007, the company was bought for $310 million by online auctions giant eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY), which already had its own secondary ticket marketplace.
Part of where StubHub succeeded most was by creating a "safe, convenient, and highly reliable environment" for buying and selling tickets, and the company used its strong reputation to secure a massive deal in 2007 with Major League Baseball to be the league's official secondary ticket company. Every team, except the Boston Red Sox, uses the StubHub system.
On the legal front, the company has fought against Ticketmaster and the New England Patriots, both of which filed unrelated lawsuits against the company over ticket resale matters.
The company has formed partnerships with other major sports and entertainment entities, including the New York Yankees, Chicago Bears and the University of Southern California, Madonna, ESPN and American Express.
Yankees, StubHub battling over site's low ticket prices
The New York Yankees are in the midst of one of Major League Baseball's most impressive streaks — despite moving into a new, smaller Yankee Stadium in 2009, the Yankees have led the American League in attendance for nine straight seasons. But the Yankees may not be entirely pleased with how the seats have been filled in the Bronx.
The New York Post reported Tuesday, April 24 that the Yankees are engaged in a dispute with StubHub, the official ticket reseller of Major League Baseball, over how inexpensively it prices some tickets to Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have the second-highest average ticket price in MLB this year ($51.55, per the Team Marketing Report) and their cheapest tickets are $5 (before service fees) in the bleachers and grandstand.
StubHub expands to UK with newly launched website
EBay's online ticket resale company StubHub has officially launched its UK site, but it is facing a few bumps in the road as it begins ticket sales in one of the world's largest ticket markets.
As covered by TicketNews, StubHub UK began in a limited capacity with its beta version debuting in December 2011. This past week marked the beginning of StubHub officially promoting the service as being open for business.
StubHub purchases Peekspy to expand services
Many companies in the secondary ticketing market are worried about the effects that paperless ticketing might have on their business — therefore, more and more of the industry's key players are acquiring additional services as a way to draw more attention from consumers.
eBay-owned StubHub, a popular online ticket exchange, has acquired Peekspy, a company that develops 3D mapping technology for entertainment venues. Peekspy's website, Fanvenues, lets users see a 3D view of the vantage point from a chosen section of seats.
TicketNews TV looks at StubHub UK, concert tours
The launch of StubHub's new UK ticket marketplace and a look at Neil Diamond's 2012 tour are among the stories discussed in the latest edition of TicketNews TV.
StubHub released the beta-version of its UK site earlier this month, with plans to launch the full site in the first half of 2012. Currently, the site is sparsely populated with listings for UK event tickets, but the site expects to ramp up quickly.
StubHub launches mobile ticketing with San Francisco Giants
Secondary ticket marketplace StubHub has rolled out a new mobile ticketing app for iPhones and Android devices that will allow fans to have their cell phones scanned at the gate in order to gain entry.
The first team to utilize the technology is the San Francisco Giants, which will begin scanning those barcoded tickets at AT&T Park today, August 25, for a series against the Houston Astros.
Texas Tech signs ticket resale deal with StubHub
PRESS RELEASE: "Texas Tech University Athletics Chooses StubHub as Official Fan to Fan Ticket Marketplace"
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (BUSINESS WIRE) August 15, 2011 – StubHub, the world's largest ticket marketplace, today announced that it will become the Official Fan to Fan Ticket Marketplace for Texas Tech University Athletics, facilitated through its existing relationship with Paciolan, the leading provider of ticketing, marketing, and fundraising solutions in college athletics. StubHub, New York Yankees prevail in New York ticket resale case
In a major victory for leading ticket resale marketplace StubHub — and in turn the overall secondary ticket market — a federal judge in New York this week ruled in favor of the company and dismissed a lawsuit by a fan who bought New York Yankees tickets from the site but complained of deceptive business practices.
Yankees fan Andrea Weinstein tried unsuccessfully to buy tickets to a 2010 Yankees game against the Kansas City Royals from the Yankees' Web site, and the site redirected her to StubHub, which has a resale ticketing deal with Major League Baseball.
StubHub begins marketing more to international countries but says expansion is premature
In an effort to increase its marketplace sales worldwide, secondary ticketing giant StubHub has begun allowing international consumers to buy tickets without currency restrictions.
In the past, ticket buyers from outside the U.S. would need a credit card drawn from a U.S. bank and a U.S. address to place orders on the StubHub marketplace, but now those restrictions have been lifted for UK and German customers, in addition to consumers from more than 50 other countries.
Philadelphia Flyers study StubHub, other secondary sites to help determine new ticket prices
The Philadelphia Flyers, coming off last season's appearance in the Stanley Cup finals and currently sitting atop the Eastern Conference, are planning to increase ticket prices next season, and the team came to that conclusion with the help of the secondary ticket market.
Team officials admitted recently that they studied StubHub, eBay, Razorgator and other secondary ticket market sites to help determine their new ticket pricing plans for next season, which Peter Luukko, president and chief operating officer of team owners Comcast-Spectacor, told the Philadelphia Daily News is part of an effort at "rescaling the house."
