The Police was an English rock trio that achieved international stardom that spanned decades. The group was originally active from approximately 1977 through 1984, during which time it released five studio albums that included time-honored hits such as "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle," "Don't Stand So Close to Me," and "Every Breath You Take." Original members Sting (bassist and lead vocalist), Andy Summers (guitarist) and Stewart Copeland (percussionist) reunited for an international tour from 2007 to 2008. The trek quickly became a worldwide sensation, selling out large arenas and stadiums. After the tour wrapped its final North American leg in August 2008, the trio again disbanded. Apart from The Police, Sting has achieved success as a solo artist, both during the band's 1984-2007 split and again in the present.
Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, The Police top tours of Billboard's year
Bon Jovi's Lost Highway Tour, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band's Magic Tour and The Police's Reunion Tour are the finalists for Top Tour (highest grossing act) and Top Draw (most ticket sales) in the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards.
They might not be the biggest of the year though, since Billboard's calendar year goes from October 1, 2007, through September 30, 2008, and the 2008 year totals are released at the end of the year. Madonna will undoubtedly top both charts. However, Billboard needs to cut off its awards to prepare its numerous charts for its year-end issue.
The Police tour to play show for PBS
The Police tour has been extended but not with a new series of concerts. Instead of ending the trek on August 5 in Wantagh, NY, the trio will perform at Madison Square Garden on August 7 in a benefit for Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations in the metropolitan New York area, WNET and WLIW.
The Police claim that this will be their final concert, ever. On June 14, instead of the usual pledge drive give-aways of mugs, CDs, DVDs, books, tote bags and other items, viewers will have a chance to get tickets for the Garden concert: a $5,000 donation will provide VIP treatment with dinner, a party and sound check attendance, while a $150 pledge will secure a pair of tickets. It is not known how many tickets will be available in each category, but the pair of tickets will go fast since at $75 each is as cheap as a Police concert ticket costs regularly.
The Police enter last stages of tour
The Police opened the final leg of its 2007-2008 world tour at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, ON on May 1. Playing mostly the songs from previous legs of the tour, albeit some with new arrangements, the trio also added "Bring On The Night" and "Demolition Man" to its repertoire.
The Police are performing its final 51 concerts in 47 cities, mostly in markets they bypassed last year, including 33 concerts in North America and 18 in Europe.
The Police nab top tour award
The Police were recently voted Major Tour of the Year at the 19th annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards which honors the cream of the concert business -- talent, venues, executives and concert production companies -- for their accomplishments in 2007.
Ticketing company of the year is conspicuously missing because it was not a category in the Pollstar awards. In fact, Pollstar's annual CIC conference has taken a very anti-secondary ticketing stance, especially StubHub, which has received "boos" from the attendees over the past few years.
The Police plan final tour
The Police, whose 2007 reunion tour racked up industry awards from Billboardand Pollstar, will return to North America this summer to play their final area appearances, this time mostly in arenas and amphitheaters in markets where they did not perform in 2007. An additional 30 dates have been confirmed beginning May 1 at the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, ON and culminating Aug. 4 at Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, NY. Elvis Costello and The Imposters will join The Police for the North American leg of the tour.
The Police Tour Continues to Rack Up Praise
By Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen
The Police tour, which was recently named Billboard’s top worldwide tour for 2007, was also named the top domestic tour of the year by Pollstar. U.S. revenues were $131.9 million for The Police, almost double the amount of the second highest-grossing domestic tour by Kenny Chesney, who grossed $71.1 million. The Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus tour came in strong at number 15 with $36 million. Cyrus was the only new artist in the chart whereas most of them are veterans with decades of touring.

By Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen
The Police tour grossed about $243 million in 2007, according to Live Nation, which recently released the full concert report for the year. The trio, who launched their reunion tour in the spring, had the top tour of the year and sold nearly 2.2 million tickets worldwide. This amends the Billboard story where The Police only grossed $212 million for the year since Billboard closes its books in mid-November.

By Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen

The tour is currently scheduled to end in February in Japan and will be reformed to accommodate shows in June.
