UK-based secondary ticket company viagogo was founded by StubHub co-founder Eric Baker, and according to its Web site, the company describes itself as "an online ticket exchange that allows people to buy and sell live event tickets in a safe and guaranteed way."

viagogo, which has branded itself with a lowercase "v," has made a name for itself by becoming the official secondary ticket exchange for powerhouse English football (soccer) teams Chelsea and Manchester United. In addition, the company is also the official secondary ticket exchange for the National Football League's Cleveland Browns.

In the fall of 2007, the company also signed a deal with Live Nation to be the concert giant's exclusive secondary ticket company in the Netherlands, and in 2008 it was the premium ticket seller for the European leg of Madonna's hugely successful Sticky and Sweet Tour.

Viagogo liquidates assets and moves to Switzerland

Viagogo, the largest online resale ticket marketplace in Europe has liquidated its assets and moved its operations to Switzerland with offices in Zurich, making it exempt from the UK law which bans the resale of Olympic Games tickets.

According to Music Week, the company changed its name to Consolidated Information Services Ltd. last month before liquidating its assets and registering a new company in Geneva under the name Viagogo AG.

Viagogo, Europe's largest online resale ticket marketplace, announced two new partnerships this past week, collaborations with the Spanish Olympic Committee and Aristeia Corporate Hospitality, a leading European hospitality provider. Viagogo is one of the fastest growing Internet companies in Europe, and by partnering up with these organizations they aim to bring their state of the art technology to new consumers.

When asked about Viagogo's collaboration with the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), director Edward Parkinson said, "Becoming a part of the Olympic movement in Spain is a big step for our business."

Viagogo may be forced to release names of RFU ticket resellers

The ongoing litigation between secondary ticketing website viagogo and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) is heading to the Supreme Court of England, where a final decision will be reached as to whether or not viagogo will be forced to release the names of individuals who sold tickets through the site for RFU matches.

Viagogo is the premier European secondary ticketing site, selling tickets to concerts and sporting events throughout the United Kingdom and continental Europe. The company was established by the co-founder of StubHub, Eric Baker. In 2006, after a falling out with StubHub's other co-founder, Jeff Fluhr, Baker brought the business model to Europe where he established viagogo.

While the Netherlands as a market is not as big as the UK or Germany – which together own about half of the estimated $9 billion European secondary ticket landscape, according to Baker – Amsterdam remains one of the premiere music destinations in the region.

Barry Bonds, the symbol of all that’s right with professional sports (amazing talent), and all that’s wrong (suspicion of steroid use, arrogance), broke one of the most hallowed of athletic records last week, the leading bit of news from the world of ticketing, sports and entertainment for the week ended August 10.

How history will ultimately judge Bonds’ breaking of Henry Aaron’s 755-home-run plateau is unclear, despite Major League Baseball trying to celebrate the accomplishment with video tributes and fireworks at the time. General sentiment seems to be against the slugger, judging by the negative press leading up to and following the event, and the sometimes hostile reaction by callers into sports talk radio. . .

Eric Baker is coming home.

The founder and CEO of U.K.-based secondary ticketer Viagogo.com, and founder and former president of StubHub! is expanding Viagogo into the U.S. with a new deal to become the authorized secondary ticket seller for the Cleveland Browns. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is reportedly a multi-year agreement.

In an interview with TicketNews, Baker said the arrangement marks the first of what could be several deals with U.S. sports teams, concert promoters or venues and stadiums, but he was quick to add that such deals are not necessary for the company’s success in the States.

“We’re very happy with our progress in the U.K., Germany and Europe, but we saw a tremendous opportunity in the U.S. market as the tickets industry becomes more of a global marketplace,” Baker said. . .
