In an attempt to put thoughts into actions, a handful of WNBA players announced the “Take a Seat, Take a Stand” initiative, where the league pledged to donate $5 from each ticket sold to nonprofits devoted to women’s issues and programs.

This $5 donation will apply to single-game tickets sales, and each WNBA team can choose which six designated games will apply to this promotion. Additionally, the promotion allows a free ticket “to send a young woman or girl to a game to inspire her by the strength, talent and leadership of the women of the WNBA,” a press release states. All 12 teams are on board with the initiative.

WNBA President Lisa Borders told the Washington Post that although people advocate for something, “It’s quite another to act on behalf of something.” She explained that this initiative goes beyond a symbolic gesture or impassioned talking points. In the past, players have been known to wear “Black Lives Matter” shirts or link arms during the national anthem, but this program offers a chance to create change.

“Our athletes realize that they have an extraordinary opportunity and perhaps an obligation to use their platform in a constructive way, and that’s what they have always done,” Borders said. “But we are beginning to make it official and really put — for lack of a better term — a stake in the ground around social issues and things that we think need to be addressed.”

Fans will have the option to chose which of the six nonprofit organizations chosen by the WNBA should receive their donation. These include Bright Pink, GLSEN, It’s On Us, MENTOR, Planned Parenthood and The United State of Women. Borders hopes that this initiative will speak directly to young women, and will be inspired.

“It’s a call to action for women, not to just support the W but also when you support the W you’re supporting not just basketball alone, but you’re supporting women,” Borders told the Seattle Times. “We think this will really appeal to these younger women. They are interested in things bigger than themselves. We think it will speak to everyone, but specifically to that demographic. They will raise their hand and say ‘I want to be a part of it.’”

So far, the Washington Mystics have decided on four home games that will take place in the promotion: the season opener game against the Fever, along with games on June 3, August 3, and August 12. Other teams are still working out the logistics and choosing which games will participate in the initiative.

The WNBA season will commence this Friday, May 25 where the Dallas Wings will take on the Phoenix Mercury. Sunday’s schedule will be filled with a full slate of games.
