“Wicked”, a Broadway musical that debuted in 2003, is about the relationship between the famous “Wizard of Oz” characters the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North, and it takes place mostly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas. Receiving mixed reviews in the beginning, the musical is now one of the most popular among other Broadway shows, breaking box office records around the world.
Produced by Universal Pictures and originally directed by Joe Mantello on Broadway, the musical is now playing in cities all over the globe, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London’s West End, Tokyo, Melbourne, and Stuttgart. The musical has also visited over 30 cities in the US and Canada on its two North American Tours. “Wicked” has proved to be a popular and enduring money maker, consistently landing at or near the top of TicketNews’s exclusive Weekly Top Events rankings.
'Wicked' reclaims top spot in Top Events Rankings
After one week out, the musical Wicked has regained the title of top-selling event in TicketNews' exclusive events rankings for the week ending Sunday, August 21, finishing the week with a power score of 3.49.
Following the popular show this week was Broadway rival The Book of Mormon (two, 2.64), Taylor Swift (three, 2.54), and the successful Sade with John Legend tour (four, 1.57).
'Wicked' takes No. 1 in Top Events for another week
TicketNews has released its exclusive events rankings for the week ending Sunday, August 7, showing that the long-running hit musical Wicked was once again the top-selling event. In at No. 1 for six consecutive weeks, the long-running production came in with a power score of 3.24 on last week's sales.
In at a strong No. 2 was Taylor Swift (2.77), followed by The Book of Mormon at No. 3 (2.68).
Strong 'Wicked' ticket sales again place musical atop events ranking
The long-running musical "Wicked" has found its way to the top once again in TicketNews' exclusive events rankings for the week ending Sunday, July 24. This makes four weeks in a row at number one for the award-winning production, coming in this week with a power score of 3.28.
In at number two this week was Taylor Swift (3.05), followed by another blockbuster Broadway seller, "The Book of Mormon" at three (2.87) and R&B sensation Adele at four (2.20).
'Wicked' stays at number one in this week's Top Events rankings
TicketNews has released its Top Events rankings for the week ending Sunday, July 10, and this week Wicked held onto the first place position for a second straight week, power scoring a 4.20.
In at number two was popular crossover artist Taylor Swift (3.18), followed by another Broadway blockbuster, The Book of Mormon at three (3.12). Coming in at number four was U2 (2.01), currently making the rounds of North America with dates postponed from last year when lead singer Bono injured his back. At number five (1.90), Paul McCartney stayed strong in the rankings as he prepares to kick off his North American tour at Yankee Stadium next week, with the tenants of the Stadium, the New York Yankees, following at number six (1.80).
'Wicked' tickets return to the top of events rankings
According to TicketNews' exclusive weekly events rankings, Wicked was the hottest selling event on the secondary market for the week ending Sunday, June 12. Power scoring a 3.88, the popular Broadway production made it back to the leader position after a five week absence.
Tickets for Miami Heat home games during their NBA Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks came in second (3.38). The Mavericks ultimately won the series 4 games to 2 over this weekend. In at number three was another Broadway blockbuster, The Book of Mormon (2.95), followed by Taylor Swift (four 2.91) and Boston Bruins tickets for the NHL Stanley Cup Finals (five, 2.27).
'Wicked' stays at the top of events rankings for fourth consecutive week
TicketNews has released its exclusive events rankings for the week ending Sunday, April 3, and this week, Wicked once again claimed the title of number one, power scoring a 3.32. The award-winning musical seems to have regained some of its strength on the secondary market, now topping the list for four weeks straight.
Despite the continued success of "Wicked", musical artists took over the majority of this week's top ten, with Taylor Swift coming in at two (2.31), Lil Wayne at three (2.27) and Bob Seger taking number four (2.13).
'Wicked' holds off Elton John to retain top event ranking for second straight week
The long-running musical Wicked is keeping its edge over all rivals, according to TicketNews' exclusive events rankings for the week ending Sunday, March 20. The hit show, in residence at the Gershwin Theatre in New York City, topped the list for the second straight week, power scoring a respectable 4.37.
Musical artists took over the remainder of the list this week, starting with Elton John at two (3.30), Jimmy Buffett at three (3.18) and Bob Seger, who is prepping for the March 26 launch of his spring tour, at four (2.92).
Not even 'Spider-Man' and the witches of 'Wicked' can stop slide in Broadway ticket sales
Box office returns struggled again this past week with ticket sales reporting $11,973,127. The same week last season did not fare much better, reporting a total of $12,878,030. Sales dropped $564,252 from the previous week ending January 30 of $12,537,379.
Despite the release of some scathing reviews from top newspapers, "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" at the Foxwoods was the highest grossing production on Broadway, bringing in $1,297,283 in sales. The musical is still in previews, but has its much-anticipated opening now schedule for March 15.
'Wicked' is number one event for fourth straight week
"Wicked" has claimed the title of top event for the fourth week in a row, according to TicketNews' exclusive events rankings for the week ending Sunday, January 9. With a power scored of 5.07, "Wicked" dominated the week's rankings, with its closest competitor, Taylor Swift, coming in with a power score of 2.44.
In at number three (2.01) this week was the January 15 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens, with Steelers ticket sales responsible for the game's numbers.
'Wicked' makes it two weeks in a row at the top of the events rankings
According to TicketNews' exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, December 26, Wicked is in the number one position for the second straight week, power scoring a 6.49. "Wicked" was followed in the rankings by Jersey Boys (two, 2.96), Taylor Swift (three, 2.29) and the 2011 BCS National Championship Game (four, 2.13).
One other musical production, West Side Story, made it into the top ten this week, coming in at number five (1.65). Non-collegiate sports were led by the New York Knicks (six, 1.61), followed by the Boston Celtics (seven, 1.55) and the Los Angeles Lakers (eight, 1.55).
