Internet auction giant eBay is one of the nation's largest exchanges for event tickets, and in early 2007 the company bought StubHub for $307 million.
eBay helped to create the modern model of online ticket exchanges because it allows fans and brokers to quickly list event ticket inventory for resale in a single destination.
The company was sued by Ticketmaster in 2007 for contract infringement for allegedly violating contracts Ticketmaster had with several arenas. The lawsuit centered on the Lynyrd Skynyrd/Hank Williams Jr. "Rowdy Frynds Tour" of the same year, because StubHub had been named the official premium ticket vendor for the tour. Ticketmaster said that violated its ticketing contracts with several of the venues the tour was going to visit. The two sides settled the case in late 2008 under undisclosed terms.
eBay and StubHub were also sued by the City of Chicago in 2008 for allegedly not collecting the city's 8 percent Amusement Tax on event tickets. The companies do not believe it should be held responsible for collecting the tax of individual resellers.
The company unofficially teamed up with TicketNetwork in 2009 to not allow people to resell President Obama Inauguration tickets, which had been distributed free.
StubHub expects 2010 revenue growth as parent company eBay posts solid financials
Unlike rival Live Nation, which last week threw cold water on investors' hopes for the rest of 2010, ticket marketplace giant StubHub is projecting revenue growth for 2010, despite a drop in ticket prices.
The company, bought by online auctions giant eBay in 2007 for more than $300 million, expects to grow revenues by 20 percent in 2010, the same amount of increase as in 2009, according to StubHub President Chris Tsakalakis.
Free Jimmy Buffett tickets pulled from eBay after benefit concert sell-out
No stranger to helping causes in and around his native Gulf Coast, it was no surprise when Jimmy Buffett stepped forward with plans for a July 1 concert to benefit the region impacted by the ongoing BP oil spill.
It was also no surprise that free tickets for the event -- booked for the public beach in Gulf Shores, AL -- were gone within minutes when they became available to the public on June 23. But Gulf-area fans were soon upset to find some of the tickets cropping up for $100 or more on Internet auction hub, eBay.com.
eBay prevails in legal fight with Chicago over collection of amusement tax
In a separate but similar action to its lawsuit against eBay subsidiary StubHub, the City of Chicago has again found itself on the wrong end of a legal case involving the collection of its amusement tax on ticket sales.
U.S. District Court Judge Blanche M. Manning last week dismissed a lawsuit against eBay by the city that claimed the auction Web site is a "reseller's agent," which would have made the site liable for collecting the 9 percent (5 percent for many cultural events) amusement tax on resold tickets.
Dustin Brighton, government relations expert at eBay, to speak at Ticket Summit
Dustin Brighton, senior manager of government relations at eBay.com, will again be one of the speakers at the upcoming Ticket Summit, scheduled for January 13-15 in Manhattan.
Prior to working for eBay, Brighton was director for government affairs- Southeast United States for Microsoft Corporation. He recently took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to TicketNews about his role at eBay, the future of online ticket sales, and what he and his fellow panelists will be discussing at Ticket Summit.
eBay suffers decline in profits as revenues for StubHub, other divisions drop
eBay's financial results for the second quarter which ended June 30, 2009 show the online auctions giant's net income fell 29 percent from last year as its Marketplaces unit, which includes StubHub, suffered from the impact of a strong dollar and the tenuous macroeconomic climate.
Net income fell to $327 million compared to $460 million in the first quarter while second quarter revenue fell to $2.10 billion, a decrease of $97.7 million from last year. eBay's commitment to fast growing, low margin business saw GAAP operating margins decrease to 19.6 percent from last year's 24.8 percent.
eBay removes all Miley Cyrus tickets for upcoming tour
Online auctions giant eBay has pulled down all Miley Cyrus tickets from its site, but the company denies it was pressured to do so by her representatives.
The 'tween singing sensation's entire upcoming tour is utilizing paperless tickets, a controversial move that has led to complaints from brokers and fans for being an inconvenience and which contributed to lagging initial sales. Cyrus's handlers made no secret of their desire to keep as many tickets out of the hands of brokers and scalpers for this tour, unlike her last one two years ago which was a public relations disaster. The Cyrus camp is scalping some tickets itself, however.
No Doubt auctions premium tickets through eBay
The pop-punk heroes in No Doubt have taken a strong stance against ticket scalping for the band's current tour. Except when it suits them just fine.
Through the Web site eBay, No Doubt is auctioning off VIP ticket packages to 16 of its upcoming shows, of which 60 percent of the proceeds from each sale will benefit the Orange County Chapter of ALS. The band also plans to hold additional auctions for more shows in the coming weeks, and the other charities that will benefit include Doctors Without Borders and charity: water.
Jay Leno wants free tickets to stay off eBay
Comedian and "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno, who is planning two free concerts in Detroit next month, is angry that tickets for the shows were being scalped on eBay.
Leno planned the Comedy Stimulus Plan shows as a free benefit for residents of Detroit and the surrounding areas, which have been hard hit by the recession. The shows are being sponsored by Pepsi, and Leno, a car enthusiast, picked Detroit because he has enjoyed playing there in the past and because of the difficulties the automobile industry is experiencing.
TicketNetwork and eBay won't allow Obama Inauguration ticket reselling
EBay, and its subsidiary StubHub, this week announced that it was joining TicketNetwork in not allowing Inaugural tickets to be resold on any of its websites. The two companies are the first major ticket exchanges to make the move.
Soon after Barack Obama was elected the nation's 44th President, interest in Inauguration tickets skyrocketed, but government officials quickly sought to end the speculative reselling of tickets that are being distributed free by Congressional members to their constituents.
StubHub helps parent company eBay post solid quarter
Online auctions giant eBay posted a $228 million increase in revenues for the quarter ended September 30, 2008, in part due to a solid quarter from its secondary ticketing division StubHub. But despite the jump in revenues, eBay's disappointing forecast for the remainder of the year led to a largely negative reaction from Wall Street.
Overall revenues for eBay for the quarter were $2.12 billion, which represents a 12 percent improvement over the same period in 2007. The company's Marketplaces group, which includes eBay.com, StubHub and Shopping.com, generated $1.38 billion in sales, which was 4 percent higher for the group than for the same period last year.
