“The Accidental Pervert” is one of those hidden gems of New York theatre. Based out of the Players Theatre, Andrew Goffman simultaneously presents his unique, personal story and the universal story of millions of men growing up in a world of adult videos and magazines.
The one-man comedy features Goffman as he narrates his life experiences from early childhood to the present day. He discovered his father’s adult video collection at the age of 11, and he details the progression of his obsession throughout his teens and 20s, as those materials became the lens through which he viewed relationships and the world. It wasn’t until he met his wife that everything changed.
Andrew Goffman has been performing “The Accidental Pervert” for over a year now, but he shows no signs of fatigue. Even after the 90-minute performance attended for this review, Goffman bounded out to greet audience members as they filed out of the Players Theatre.
The show itself is laugh-out-loud funny, as long as you’re the kind of person who can laugh about decidedly adult subject matter. From the amazing pre-show playlist and the long list of punny video titles, to the conclusion of the show, the production is engaging and entertaining.
Because the narrative revolves almost solely around adult materials, this show is not appropriate for anyone under the age of 18 without parental consent. There is a brief film clip that includes nudity and a few other suggestive visuals.
