A recap of the most recent version of the Ticket Summit trade show and conference is the focus of a special edition of TicketNews TV.

Correspondent Kim Crandall reports that more than 750 ticketing professionals and other live entertainment executives attended the three-day event in July at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, the sixth year the event was held at the location.

“In terms of the diversity of the attendees, [Ticket Summit] has really expanded into [attracting] sports team executives, a larger number of producers and promoters, box office managers, and of course, the primary and secondary ticketing agents,” said Molly Martinez, Ph.D, the event’s executive director. The show offered industry professionals the opportunity to network with their peers, while also giving them the chance to learn about new innovations in the ticketing market and statistical information.

Jon Potter, president of the consumer advocacy group the Fan Freedom Project, offered insights into the mindset of ticket buyers.

“[A total of] 48 percent [of ticket buyers] are not likely to purchase paperless tickets,” Potter said. “The more people know about paperless tickets, the less they like them.”

Doug Lyons, vice president of product strategy for Tickets.com, said that smaller venues are also becoming more empowered. “It used to be that only large-scale sports teams or venues could afford the staff and effort to manage their own ticketing. I think we’re seeing some players in the space that are trying to make that easier.”

Another highlight of the show was a panel discussion led by the authors of the new book “Ticket Masters: The Rise of the Concert Industry and How the Public Got Scalped,” who said that all aspects of the industry are more interconnected than people realize.

“You begin to realize that there’s not two sides to every story, there are five or six sides to every story,” said Josh Baron, editor-in-chief of Relix magazine and co-author of the book.

The next Ticket Summit will be held from January 18-20 in New York City at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel.
