Apparently, the big, green guy just couldn't scare up enough ticket sales. Just over a year into its run, Shrek the Musical will close on January 3, according to Variety. Expectations for the family friendly musical were high, and to date it has grossed nearly $40 million. But, attendance numbers were up-and-down, with the show sometimes playing to audiences of 60 percent capacity or less. A national tour of the show is still on pace to begin in Chicago in July, 2010.
