Broadway Ticket Sales Report
Week ending March 4, 2007
By Carol-Ann Rudy
A distinctly less robust week on Broadway: almost all productions reported fewer attendees and ticket sales. The gross this past week was $15,380,052, compared to the last reporting period of $18,294,393.
One bright note are the previews that began Feb. 27 of “Curtains” at the Hirschfeld by the creators of “Cabaret,” “New York, New York,” and “Chicago.” It stars David Hyde Pierce and is produced by Roger Berlind, Roger Horchow, Daryl Roth, Jane Bergre, Ted Hartley, and Center Theatre Group. It grossed $458,168 in its first week filling 63% of the theatre’s capacity. It outstripped “Talk Radio” at just 50% capacity with $184,593 in ticket sales and “Journey’s End” at a dismal 33% capacity with $124,250. “Prelude to a Kiss” continued on an even keel with only a slight drop in attendance and sales, 65% and $164,564.
Other productions hovering around the half-full mark were “The Vertical Hour” with $235,165 in sales, “The Producers” with $458,163, and “Rent” with $281,972 in sales.
The two highest-grossing productions, not surprisingly, were “Wicked” at just over 99% capacity with $1,355,906 in ticket sales and “Jersey Boys” at just over 100% capacity with $1,159,592 in sales.
Other productions continuing to fare well were “Translations” at 95% capacity with $272,648 in sales and “The Coast of Utopia” at almost 92% capacity and $516,380 in sales. “Mamma Mia!” continues to be a favorite at 90% capacity with ticket sales of $777,664. “The Lion King” enjoyed 82% capacity with $892,194 in sales. “The Color Purple” continues to do well at 80% capacity with $686,063 in ticket sales.
A quick note: the redoubtable Garrison Keillor in “A Prairie Home Companion” paid homage to Broadway on March 4 with its re-broadcasting of “The Best of Broadway,” featuring singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth and director, writer, and performer Walter Bobbie and others.
