More previews and openings on Broadway! “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” a play by Eugene O’Neill, began previews March 29 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The opening is set for April 9th. “Inherit the Wind,” a revival of the play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee based on the Scopes 1925 “Monkey Trial,” is in previews at the Broadway Lyceum and opens on April 12th. Lastly, “Frost/Nixon,” a play by Peter Morgan, began previews March 31st at the Jacobs and opens April 22nd.
“The Year of Magical Thinking,” a play by Joan Didion, opened March 29th. It grossed a respectable $335,730 and played to an almost 80% filled house at the Booth Theatre.
“The Pirate Queen,” the musical, is in previews at the Hilton Theater, is set to open April 5th. It is the real-life story of the Irish Chieftain Grace O’Malley. It had $663,265 in ticket sales at 80% capacity this past week.
Hitting the high notes again this week are “Wicked,” $1,392,168 at 100% capacity; “The Lion King,” $1,193,494 at 100%; “Mary Poppins,” $1,153,161 at 98%; and “Jersey Boys, $1,154,445 at 100%.
Other productions pulling in the crowds at 95% capacity or better are: “Spamalot” with $908,385 and 100% capacity, “Les Miserables” with $665,549 and 100% capacity, “Beauty and the Beast” with $776,278 at 97%, and “The Phantom of the Opera” with $778,317 at 95%.
Lagging behind the crowd were: “Company” with $253,502 at just over 47%, and “Journey’s End” which still hasn’t found its audience, at just under 36% capacity.
If the top ticket price counted, then “Jersey Boys” at $351.50 a ticket, a “Chorus Line” coming in second at $301.25, and “Wicked” at $300.00 would be in the lead in that order. However, comparing their standing by virtue of gross receipts and capacity, ticket price is clearly not the criteria with which to measure a show’s popularity.
The gross for the past week was $19,276,166.
