In 1970, the careers of young singer-songwriters James Taylor and Carole King took off with a debut performance at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Forty years later, the pair will pay tribute to their beginnings with the Troubadour Reunion Tour in 2010.
The international venture will begin in Pacific waters with a five-date run of Australia and New Zealand before it moves onto Japan. The overseas shows are lined up from March 27 at Rod Laver arena in Melbourne, AUS, through April 14 and 16 at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, JAP.
At this point, the only U.S. performance on the books is a May 14 show at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets for that concert go on sale November 23, and additional North American and European tour dates are forthcoming.
“When James and I first played together in the early seventies, we connected immediately, both musically and personally, with an effortless, comfortable familiarity,” King said in a statement for the upcoming venture.
While the pair first performed at the Troubadour nearly 40 years ago, the 2010 tour is actually a follow-up to Taylor and King’s stage reunion at that venue in 2007. The gig, a 50th anniversary concert for the Troubadour, featured the original band from the musicians’ earliest shows at the club: guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Lee Sklar and drummer Russ Kunkel.
The three original backing musicians will also accompany Taylor and King on the 2010 venture. The two artists will play from their catalog of songs, including some of the tunes played during their original Troubadour show.
“This tour, our Troubadour Reunion, has been waiting to happen for a long time and the years seem to have vanished. Where does the time go?” Taylor mused in the statement. “When we reunited for the Troubadour’s 50th Anniversary celebration, it felt like yesterday. It was and still is all about the music and the songs that we get to perform together.”
