On March 29, 2013, the San Francisco cloud-based event ticketing company, Vendini Inc, was the target of a cyber attack which compromised customers’ sensitive information including names, mailing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers and expiration dates. Although this attack occurred almost three months ago, some Vendini customers are just receiving notification that their information may be at risk. With an estimated one million customers effected by this hack, patrons are wondering why it has taken so long for the company to notify them. In a statement released by Vendini, the company explained that an official notice to customers was delayed due to law enforcement investigation of the incident. However during that extended period, numerous customers received notifications from their credit card companies of fraudulent activity and likely had little idea of how their information could have been compromised. In an age when the transmission of sensitive information via the internet is so common, companies need to make the protection of customer information a priority, and in this instance, Vendini dropped the ball.
